-- UNINSPIRING IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA -- I was not referring to steroid users. I mentioned how Gibby does not have the personality to be the most visible member of management on TV night after night. That dull monotone, almost mumbling. No enthusiasm, not moving a muscle. There is more to being a manager than managing.
-- RUMORS ABOUT HIS PLAYERS UNHAPPY -- If that is being reported, it is a factor. Managers with unhappy players don't keep their jobs too long. The Front Office not extending his contract (and that of Towers) at this time as previously promised certainly indicates hesitation by the powers that be.
A problem. An outcome. It doesn't look good for Gibby's future as D'backs manager. Justifying it as a fan doesn't change it.
I don't think Gibby is a great manager, nor do I think he is a terrible manager. I highly doubt he will become a rah-rah guy for next season. The team will succeed or fail based on the moves that are made this offseason and the development of our young hitters. They will need to get the bullpen in order and hope that Eaton or Campana, Davidson, and Didi or Owings continue to develop and contribute offensively and defensively.
I think Kevin Towers should be more worried about his job. The contracts handed to Heath Bell, Cody Ross, Trevor Cahill, Brandon McCarthy and to a lesser extent and JJ Putz are bad contracts. He knows there is a limited payroll and 4 of those guys take up a huge chunk of that payroll. They have shown a willingness to go over the payroll but I am sure they expect playoffs in those instances.
