Stanton is not good. Have the Cardinals won games with him under center? Yes. Have they won because of his play? Absolutely not. Gabbert two years ago on a terrible SF team pre-Chip Kelly was way better than Stanton and he point blank has more God given ability. Hell the passes he threw tonight Stanton could NEVER make because he doesn't have the arm strength. This is truly a no brainer if you want to keep the better player.

Let's see Gabbert do something other than ripping up 2nd stringers & some 3rd teamers before announcing he's anything more than average yet!

Haven't you guys learned from preseason history before?
He tore us up pretty nice two years ago in SF during the regular season. Stanton is terrible. I seriously don't understand why anyone would want that guy as the backup. It's baffling.

Why cut Stanton? We need 3 QB's, and no reason for the cap space. While Stanton has looked horrible much of the time, he has won his share of games for us. I feel very good about our backup situation with both Stanton and Gabbert. No need to choose between them.
Why cut Stanton? Easy. He isn't a good QB.

Stanton preseason 2016, 11 of 28 or 39.3% with a qbr of 26.5.

Gabbert preseason game 1, 11 of 14 or 78.6% with a qbr of 118.8.

I'm not drawing any conclusions yet because it's just a small sample size but that's a night and day comparison.

Plus we save 1.6 against the cap

It was the touch he had on the ball and how he got it to the right location. Granted he was playing against a vanilla offense and 2nd stringers, but he still showed way more talent than Stanton ever has.

IMO Stanton is under appreciated on this forum. He has his flaws but he also has won more games than lost as a starter for the Cards. Gabbert had a very good debut as a Card but it's just a half of FB during the PS so far too early too make any solid judgements now.

+1.

Guy does the exact job he is required to do, and people are calling for his head.

I do not get it nor care to get it. I will take a backup QB that can come in, and win games any day.

This is one of those, "don't know what you got till its gone" type things.

Hwoa whoa slow your roll.. Stanton has been here how long and every available qb that has entered the Cardinal galaxy gets shot down why? "Because he doesn't know the system".

Looks like Mr Gabbert has a foot in the door....
Remember all the talk about how hard it is to learn our system and thats why everyone looks bad in it?

No matter if it was a 1st string or 4th string, when the rush was closing in, he didn't get happy feet, stood in there and got the ball out. And no, I'm not ready to anoint him for anything but he did look poised.

Next game, Stanton will either start or come in early for CP. And I'm expecting Gabbert to play most/all of the second half. In the third game, Gabbert and Stanton might switch roles, and if that happens, we'll be in a better position to have an educated opinion of the two.

Yes.

I understand that it was a preseason Hal of fame game...game number one and the vanilla offense and heck...the only similarities was watching a kicker miss a field goal.

Plus Gabbert is on his 7th offensive coordinator in 7 years. Pretty hard to learn a system & get comfortable in it when it changes every year & you have to start all over.

What I learned last night with Gabbert, is regardless of what Defense he is facing.. He is capable of going through progressions, Something Stanton has never done, even against future Insurance Salesmen in the Preseason.

I think Gabbert could be a really good QB for us... Did you all see that dumpster-fire list of Coaches he's had the misfortune to work with?

I agree. Carson Palmer isn't getting any younger.

I like the idea of keeping 3 QBs in case of injury. If the Cardinals keep only 2 QBs, I'd rather keep Gabbert over Stanton looking towards the future.

I feel better with keeping 3 QB's who can all win games for us.

Carson ain't no spring chicken, and no one worries enough about depth until someone goes down.

The bad thing for Gabbert is that if he makes the team this year, there could be a whole different coaching staff next year if BA decides to retire.
