I am taking the pro athletes approach from now on:

I'm warning all the people around me. If beer is spilled or thrown my direction, i'm coming after you!

I'm just kidding. I get beer thrown my direction at almost every Cardinals game. It's beer! Fighting has never solved anything!!!

The newspaper in Indy had a columnist say in today's paper that Artest going into the stands was "human nature" after having beer thrown on him.

Why are so many people taking the players side on this. What a joke!

The sad thing is that we are approaching the day where plexiglass is going to surround the playing fields to protect players, fans, referees, and coaches.

Any player going into the stands is dead wrong and should consider himself lucky that he wasn't killed.
The same goes for a fans that walks onto the field or court. What ever happens to that person is deserved.
I'm not a violent person but that fan that came on to the court and got clocked made me smile. He is the type of person that will play a role on how new laws and restrictions on us decent spectators.

Funny that never seems to hold up in court.

Artest and every other person involved in throwing fist should all be brought up on assault charges.

I am tired of rich people, and celebs getting out of legal punnishment because of there wallet or social standings.

It's so easy to make Artest the whipping boy in this case....this was the fans fault. Yes, if someone purposely throws a cup full of ice at me during a game, I'm going after them.

And I am sick of people who think pro athletes and movie stars are fiction and they can say or do anything they want to them without that person doing something back.

I feel bad for Artest. Because of his reputation (a much deserved one) he will get the blame.

Ben Wallace started it by blowing up after a foul that wasn't even that hard.

Then when things started to cool down, with Artest lying down on the scorers table, he got beer thrown at him...He did what most people would do--Fight back. He should have shown better restraing, but I feel bad because of the raw deal he is gonna get from all this.

I gotta agree with you. Imagine the cops showing up and you are stone cold sober standing over some guy with a busted up face. The cops look at the blood on your knuckles and ask what happened. You tell them "he threw a plastic dixie cup at me so I broke his jaw". Whoo-hoo free ride in a police car for you.
You honestly think someone is going to write up an article in the papers the next day about how you only did what was human nature?
Any jury in the country would put you or I away for several months in prison. Let's see what sort of little love tap on the wrist these players get.

I dont think so, If someone threw a full beer in a plastic cup at your face i believe it is considered assault and you could fight back. Remember usually someone who throws something at you isnt going to just walk away after..usually a punch comes after you blind them with beer. Where is Shane when you need him.

Yes it is assault and yes you have a right to defend yourself. You're 100% correct.

But

there was no way Artest could know exactly who threw the beer on him. His mistake was just jumping into the stands and arbitrarily throwing punches.
That's the dif. there.
The other thing is the guy on the court. I don't know for sure, but I think he was just talking smack and got smacked.
The older dude in the stands that started throwing punches from behind got what was coming to him.
All said, if I was there with my daughter (we go to alot of games together) and we couldn't get out of it and got stuck in the middle and she got hurt.
I'd be a very angry man.

First: No, it's not assault, it is battery. Being the victim of battery does not give one a automatic free pass to go friggin nuts on someone. The victim has a right to press charges. That's all.

Second: The dude he ended up going after clearly wasn't the guy who threw the cup. 1) he had a full cup 2) he was pretty meek 3) considering his meekness, he wasn't running 4) up until he actually got his face grabbed, he was looking like, "I wonder where he's going?"

I think it was that chick in the Pistons jersey that Artest ran right by that threw it. She looked like she was egging him on and, for a moment, looked like she knew she was getting her a$$ kicked in 2 seconds. She looked surprised when he flew by her.

ESPN interviewed the police chief and he was asked if Artest's reaction (self defense) was justified in the eyes of the law. The police chief basically implied that self defense is justifiable when threatened with a dangerous item "like a chair." He started to say "it was just a plastic cup," but stopped when he realized he was talking to the media.

I've had beer thrown on me, too. When I bartended, you'd be surprised at the hostility of some folks who get cut off. Yeah, it sucks to be wet, but big friggin deal! If you can't take some beer on your shirt without going nuts, your the real puss.

They had a Detroit cop on TV last night saying it is assault and the police do take into account the right to defend yourself. Maybe you're right, but I honestly don't care.

I dont think he will get in trouble for that. They give warnings not to go on the court before the game. And its on the back of the ticket I believe. Im sure that if a player of any sport has someone running on their court/field at them they are justified hitting them. The fan shouldnt be there and can be veiwed as a threat.

Artest didn't hit the first guy. He shoved him down, and was trying to find out if he was the guy. He never hit that guy...then the dude in blue popped Artest in the back of the head twice, and he hit THAT guy.

Throwing the beer at Artest with intent to harm is an assault. The cup was one of the hard plastic cups, not the thin, light ones. It also hit Artest in the eye/nose, on the edge of the cup's bottom..I've got a similar cup right here, and I just took it empty and dropped it from about 6 inches onto my cheekbone by my eye. Smarted a bit. Now fill it up and toss it from about 15 feet away. I bet it hurt. This isn't about someone pouring beer on him...it was about a solid object hitting him in the face as he lay down doing nothing.

The worst thing about this, is that the shoving match on the court was basically over...there wasn't going to be a fight...then beer muscles heaved his drink into Artest's face. Voila, all hell breaks loose.

What happens in a MLB game when a fan throws something on the field or at a player.... they kick the fan out.

Same thing happen in football.

If Artest would of remained calm after the beer hit him (and other people around him), the fan would of been kicked out. NO BRAWL...

Did the other people that got hit by beer run in the stands...no....

Fighting solves nothing. Pro athletes who think that are bigger than everyone piss me off.

That ice might feel pretty good during a September home game.

Ask the guy who got stabbed at this years preseason Cards/Raider game if fighting was worth it.

Fighting is nothing but one's ego getting in the way.

Who cares a Raiders fan stabbed another Raiders fan...They can stab each other all day if they want....

I train to fight 3 times a week and I even get nervous and try to step away when possible. If I have a chance to walk away I do it. But I wont be walking away with beer all over me. if anyone threw a beer at me I will be kicking ass.

What would fighting prove? Would your kids be watching? Leave the tough guy ego in the car!

I would kind of feel the same way if I thought he would get away with it..but when I get in fights I've hurt the other guy...bad... so I try to control my temper and let the authorities handle it...
