In terms of playing style, Max Hall reminds me of Tyler Palko (i.e. smart, mobile, good decisions, accurate etc.). I felt we should have kept Palko as our #3 last year instead of BSP.
However, if I recall correctly, Palko struggled a bit in his final appearance against a more complex defense, and the Cards kept St. Pierre instead.
All of which is not to knock Hall. I'm ambivalent. On one hand, I think Max outplayed all three of the other guys in various aspects of how you want your QB to perform. (I'm excited about the guy). And I still feel we should have kept Palko a year ago.
But we haven't yet seen how Max will hold up against more complicated NFL defenses, working with a full play book. And - assuming that there is some growing pains he'll have to experience, we don't know how quickly he will grow into the total deal & a QB we can win with.
There are cliches on both sides of the argument - At one end is the "Blood-lines", "Local School", "BYU Program" which should automatically make him king. On the other end is the "Undrafted Rooks Can't Make It" rap.
I'm not gonna say that Max falls somewhere in the middle (He could turn out to be great, average or disappointing - we don't know; we can only guess). But we'd be better off evaluating him on the basis of what he knows or doesn't know, what he can or cannot do and how quick or slow he can learn his trade.
