Agreed. And most importantly Polumalu doesn't have to play much man in this defense either.

Wilson should be used much like Polumalu is. Wilson SHOULD NOT be man on man with anyone. The day Wilson was assigned to cover Antonio Gates was the first "Whaaaaa ?" that started to show our former DC the door.

Let him rush the passer, play zone, read the play, and make a play.
.
I still remember laughing when AW was lined up man to man on Percy Harvin. That was the second, third, and fourth "Whaaaaa?"

I caution everyone on expecting miracles in the first season. I would be shocked if the Cards ended up in the top third or even top half of the league in defense. The unfortunate reality is that the personel isn't in place yet.

On the elite 3-4 teams the NT and one or both OLBs are All NFL types. Williams and OB have flashed potential but relying on those guys to dominate next year is expecting too much.

Another year for talent to develop, another infusion of talent through the draft, and a year to implement the defense is necessary before you make judgements on the defense.
If we can get into the 15-20 range, that would be a success. Added to [hopefully] getting a vet QB to do well with the offense, and we can make the playoffs again.

Exactly. This is not an easy system to install, especially considering the off season training programs may be limited.

I do have a feeling our defense will improve over last year but we'll be more middle of the pack than upper third. This defense will probably take about 3 years to reach a really consistent level.

Great advice hpyo----I hope that we see continual progress for some time to come with this unit. We don't need it to happen overnight, but we do need to see positive strides, and to see the work continuing as they get better.

Great post Hypo! I really enjoyed it, Thank you

Thanks man.

I think if we are going to make a serious run at implementing this defense, and expect to have any kind of real success in the near future, we better get to committing to adding some serious talent to our LBs in this draft and/or FA. It takes at least 1 offseason probably 2 for LBs to learn it. We can't keep putting if off and being complacent about our LB issues. D. Washington and O'brien Schofield were a good start but we still need more.

You could well be right but I heard Horton in an interview say that the most important part of being able to implement LeBeau's defense was having defensive lineman that can run and that was what made Arizona so attractive to him.

He seemed to be saying that you have to have lineman who have the physical ability to drop into coverage and have the ability to move and run.

If what he says is true Arizona is well positioned with guys like Dockett and Campbell.

We have talent on our DL for sure. We'll still need the LBs though.
