This REALLY sucks. $130 fine if your license plate frame covers the state name of Arizona. I have to remove mine since it covers the state name.

Everyone please read carefully! This new law takes effect Jan 1, 2009. Please understand you can have a license plate frame holder as long as it doesn't cover the name Arizona on the top your license plate, if the license plate frame holder covers the name Arizona, you'll receive from the nice police officer a $130.00 ticket! This is your responsibility as privileged Arizona drivers to know new motor vehicle laws - the state doesn't send out mailings. For more info on new motor vehicle laws click on the link below. So if you have a frame holder that covers the name Arizona on your license plate remove it before Jan 1, 2009 and replace it with one that doesn't cover the name Arizona.

[FONT=&quot]PHOENIX [/FONT]— Progress on two massive widening projects—on I-17 in the North Valley and on I-10 in the West Valley—continues as 2008 winds down. Improvements along several freeways will require mostly overnight restrictions this weekend. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is encouraging drivers to allow extra travel time and use alternate routes while the following restrictions are in place:

Southbound I-17 closed between Happy Valley Road and Rose Garden Lane from 10 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday (December 14) for widening project. [FONT=&quot]DETOUR[/FONT][FONT=&quot]:[/FONT] Exit at Happy Valley Road and use the southbound frontage road to travel beyond the closure.

[FONT=&quot]Southbound I-17 on-ramp closed overnight at Happy Valley Road[/FONT] for widening project. [FONT=&quot]Southbound on- and off-ramps at Pinnacle Peak Road also closed.[/FONT] Ramp closure times are from [FONT=&quot]10 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday[/FONT] (December 14) and from [FONT=&quot]10 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday[/FONT] (December 15).

[FONT=&quot]Southbound I-17 off-ramp closed at Deer Valley Road from 10 p.m. Saturday until fall 2009[/FONT] for widening project. [FONT=&quot]DETOUR[/FONT][FONT=&quot]:[/FONT] Use adjacent interchanges while Deer Valley ramp is closed.

[FONT=&quot]Westbound I-10 narrowed to one lane between 91st and 107th avenues from 11 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday[/FONT] (December 14) for widening project. Ramps at 99th and 107th avenues closed. [FONT=&quot]DETOUR[/FONT][FONT=&quot]:[/FONT] Use Avondale Boulevard to enter and exit I-10.

[FONT=&quot]Southbound Loop 101[/FONT] (Agua Fria Freeway) [FONT=&quot]ramp to westbound I-10 closed from 11 p.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday [/FONT](December 14). [FONT=&quot]DETOUR[/FONT][FONT=&quot]:[/FONT] Exit Loop 101 to westbound McDowell Road , then go south on Avondale Boulevard to enter I-10.

[FONT=&quot]Northbound I-17 narrowed to one lane overnight between 7th Avenue and Van Buren Street from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Saturday[/FONT] (December 13) for roadway repair. On- and off-ramps closed between 7th Avenue and Adams Street. [FONT=&quot]DETOUR[/FONT][FONT=&quot]:[/FONT] Use westbound I-10 as an alternate route.

[FONT=&quot]Southbound Loop 101[/FONT] (Pima Freeway) [FONT=&quot]narrowed to one lane overnight between Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Thunderbird Road from 11 p.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday[/FONT] (December 15) for carpool lane construction. [FONT=&quot]DETOUR[/FONT][FONT=&quot]:[/FONT] Please slow down and use caution in the work zone.

[FONT=&quot]Loop 101[/FONT] (Price Freeway) [FONT=&quot]narrowed to two lanes in both directions at Southern Avenue from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday[/FONT] (December 14) for SRP utility work. A 15-minute closure will also be needed shortly after daybreak. On- and off-ramps at Southern Avenue closed. [FONT=&quot]DETOUR[/FONT][FONT=&quot]:[/FONT] Access freeway at either Baseline or Broadway roads.

Some towns are making you pay more than the $130 from what I understand. I am pretty sure that the fine in Scottsdale is higher. Not sure how they can do that, but whatever. I have to get rid of mine, too. Stupid laws.

Are they trying to say that without the word "Arizona" visible on the plate that law enforcement officers would not be able to distinguish the plate as being an Arizona plate? C'mon, they're pretty distinctive. I think the cactus or words "Grand Canyon State" pretty much give it away, especially if you live in Arizona, which I would hope the officers do.

I can see needing to be able to identify an out of state plate, but tell it's an Arizona plate without seeing the word "Arizona"? Really?

I think you nailed it - photo radar is black and white - no color.
Tax revenues are down - cities are doing all kinds of things to extract $ out of the citizenry.
Here's one - my favorite ex lives in a triplex - landlord tells her that no one in the neighborhood complained about the unpaved driveway for DECADES - a city inspector was seen cruising the street - then he gets a "pave or get fined" notice. Watch out ya'll - the man will will extract money from us one way or the other.

It is a statewide thing, but every city fines you a different amount.

Scottsdale is only $120. Mesa is $127.50.

BTW: I heard that it is not because of photo radar.

It is because of the new license plate scanners that the police are using. If your plate is more than 12 inches above the ground and unobstructed it can be read much easier by the scanners.

Thanks for posting this info. My wife had told me about hearing it from someone, but I hadn't seen it in writing yet. Removed my Cardinal plate cover and put it on the front with my Cardinal plate. Oh well, better than getting a ticket.
