I know he is basically a TV director but I have to put McG out there too. Can't stand the majority of what he does when he is directing.

I never pay attention to TV directors as most series have so many of them so I had to look him up. And you're right. I'd only mocked him before for ruining a Terminator movie, I had no idea he also gave us the first episode of several horrible TV shows. Although I don't know if it's fair to hold him responsible for Shadowhunters unless he also made the call on casting decisions.

He was a big director on Supernatural in the early days and was even an actor on a pretty good episode that took place in Hollywood.

I know this is sacrilege but wanted to bring up another overrated director, Quentin Tarantino. Great writer, mediocre director.

I pretty much agree with all of this, but IMO the definition of being overrated is having tons of accolades thrown at you and you not deserving them. Michael Bay doesn’t really have any accolades as a director.
Well, now that you've got some criteria it makes more sense. Bay isn't even in the discussion of what 'overrated' is.

How about Shyamalan? Though he might be the same as Bay..

Nah... if you want to argue M. Night, that's a good "overrated" discussion. Dude knocked his first two movies out of the freaking park and hit a triple with Signs before he tripped over third base on his way home.

Then he went into an utter stink-hole for almost a decade.

I guess the overrated question here is if you think he's righted himself with his last two flicks. Personally, I do think he's back on the way up with The Visit and Split. But it's a worthwhile discussion.

dude's resurrected/started too many people's career to call him a mediocre director, IMO.

And he's been super successful in multiple genres, IMO. And there is NO ONE who can ratchet tension up to 11 like he can. Has anyone watched Inglorious Basterds lately? That movie is a masterclass on building tension to the perfect pitch until a scene literally explodes.

but, this is a fun discussion.

My opinion is that it’s more a function of the script than the direction. My biggest problem with him is Pulp Fiction. But I’m probably the only one on this entire board that thinks this way.

I couldn't make it through Sixth Sense. Tried 3 times and fell asleep on the first. Still haven't seen past the first 20min or so of it. I liked Signs and The Village until the last 20min when then it got silly. And, the one with people jumping off roofs and randomly dying.

I've tried powering through his movies, but the endings usually seem to fall flat.

explain a little more on this, if you would. or do you mean the script is SO good that his direction doesn't matter?

I can't comment on any of the technical aspects of film making but I thought Pulp Fiction was near perfect film making. Having Jackson and Travolta do their yuppie stroll at the end of the movie was a game changer IMO and I'm not fond of playing games with the sequence of events. Had that movie followed a straight time line, I'd have been impressed but would have never watched it again. I went to see it many, many times in the theater which is something I never do (since the first Star Wars anyway).

I definitely think that about Travolta. I will give him some credit, he has gotten better and I do like his films. I think Django and the first Kill Bill are very strong directorial efforts.

I just think his appeal speaks more to his writing than to anything else.

Understood, and I acknowledge that Pulp Fiction has become a cultural classic, even though IMO it is easily the most overrated film on the past 30 years. Even more than Chicago, and that’s saying something.

Wow. Putting it with Chicago? That's tough to fathom. But mentioning Chicago makes me think of La La Land which makes me wonder when we get to the "most overrated actor" category? At the risk of incensing a few of the Gosling fans here, I have my nominee ready to go.

Oh, and for me, the most overrated film of the last 30 years would be the one that won the Best Picture Oscar the year Pulp Fiction came out. IMO there were at least 3 nominees that year that deserved it more than Gump.

Shawshank deserved it more than Forrest Gump, IMO. I also have a love for Quiz Show as well. There's going to be subjective arguments about almost EVERY year. When Braveheart won, there are a lot of people that thought Apollo 13 should have taken it. When Titanic won, there were plenty of people that wanted L.A. Confidential to take it home more. In 1996, people wanted Fargo to win it over English Patient. I liked English Patient, but I also thought Shine might have deserved it more than English Patient.

I however do not think Pulp Fiction deserved it more than Gump. People tend to forget, especially that movie, just how good it is.

while I think Pulp and Shawshank were more deserving of Gump, Gump was a pretty incredible love-letter to America and supremely entertaining. That was just a very special year of movie-making. I mean, there's those three movies and Quiz Show was great too and I haven't even mentioned The Lion King, Speed, Dumb and Dumber and True Lies.

And those pretty much made up the top of the box office too.

Eli Roth. I see praises for his work but I think every one of his movies sucked. I still haven't gotten the time back from watching Cabin Fever. However he was great in Inglorious Basterds.

I must intentionally not be paying attention, but I don't seen any praises for his work. I think he is terrible.
