BLOOMINGTON — Indiana basketball point guard Myles Rice's name is officially in the transfer portal, per a source with knowledge of the situation.
New IU coach Darian DeVries doesn't have a single returning player on the roster now with Rice, Kanaan Carlyle and Bryson Tucker all entering the portal in recent days.
The transfer portal is open from March 24 to April 22 this year.
Rice had an ever-shifting role for IU and closed out the season coming off the bench with Trey Galloway taking over as the team's primary ball-handler. He averaged 10.1 points, 2.8 assists and 2.8 rebounds per game as one of four Hoosiers to play in all 32 games (25 starts).
"I'm just a guy that's going to do whatever it takes to win," Rice said after a loss to Oregon in the Big Ten Tournament.
More: Mind Your Banners: THIS. IS. MARCH. It's going to be a busy one for Indiana.
He struggled in some notable late-game situations from a botching an inbounds play on Indiana's final-possession in a 79-78 loss to Maryland to forcing an ill-timed shot in the final minute of an 81-76 loss at Purdue with former coach Mike Woodson looking to call a timeout.
Indiana center Oumar Ballo shouted at Rice during the next break in play and had to be pulled away from the huddle by other teammates.
“I’ve got to help Myles because he’s a big piece to what we do, and I believe in him and I’m going to keep pushing him to be better," Woodson said after the game.
It was in sharp contrast to the poise Rice showed in an exhibition win over Tennessee. He put up 20 points, four assists and two steals while facing off against Volunteers point guard Zakai Zeigler, the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
That momentum carried over to early season wins over South Carolina and UNC Greensboro. Rice was the best player on the floor with 21.5 points (62.5%), 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, but he wasn't able to consistently play at that level during conference play.
Rice was part of IU's high-profile transfer class that Woodson hoped would get the program back on track after missing last year's NCAA Tournament. The former Washington State guard earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and freshman All-American honors in 2023-24.
He set a long list of freshman records for the Huskies including single-scoring (519), single-season assists (134), single-season steals (56). He started all 35 games and helped led the program to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 16 seasons.
It was an emotional season for Rice, who received a medical redshirt the previous year after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He finished his chemotherapy treatments on March 9, 2023 and got the news he was in remission in June.
