NOTES, QUOTES

—If you've followed the Cardinals and you haven't been around in a while, you'd hardly recognize the place.

They've got only a dozen guys who were there two years ago.

They look like a different team on the field in their newly restyled practice uniforms, which parallel the redesigned game-day uniforms, complete with menacing bird logo, that they'll break out this fall.

They're going into their final season at Sun Devil Stadium before they move into a retractable-roof, retractable-field, state-of-the-art facility in Glendale, Ariz., that will have every electronic gizmo known to man.

They have a fresh voice leading them, albeit still a Bidwill, who when he isn't changing the way the team operates he's helping the Italian cops nail bad guys (Vice President and General Counsel Michael Bidwill was in the right place at the right time to help stop a fleeing suspect while on vacation in Milan).

They've managed their salary cap beautifully while stocking the roster with high-grade young talent.

They go into the season with people actually expecting them to win their division, the NFC West.

All of a sudden it is a cutting-edge outfit that is on the verge of showing people how it's done.

Oh wait - it must be the heat. They still haven't won a game this season. Doing that 12 or 13 times will verify that they truly are on the right track to becoming a model franchise.

There it's warranted, there it's earned. The Cardinals win games, they win the press.

It all sounds great. We have all been here before. But, why does this year feel different? Why do people not laugh when I say this could be our year? Why is my wife asking questions again? Is this the year we don't dissapoint the 20-30 thousand who give a darn? Is this the year the last 3 games will mean something other than a high draft pick?

I wake up now in the middle of the night wanting to read more. I do this every year. I want my personal licence plate CARDFAN to be read without snickering. I yearn for the time guests in my home will look at all the Cardinals stuff in my office as special rather than "Hey you have so much Cardinals stuff, Why?". Maybe this year, maybe this year, just follow the red brick road. I'm off to see the Bidwill the wonderful Bidwill of OZ?????

We'll know in about 60 days. The "Old" Cardinals always managed to have something bad happen to them during preseason. Holdouts or Vikings turf or car wrecks. A sure sign things have changed will be if they suit up opening day without a key starter out with a knee injury.

Yes, I remember the car wreck , Rob Moore, Rosenbach, and the rest. Just last year Shipp, Bolden started it off. Shipp never played a down and Q came back late in the season. But, that car wreck might have been the upper most insult. Dye never played a down again and the rest never played good football again. It' s crazy. I hope this year will be different. I hate the fact that everyone seams to be picking us and saying nice things. (yes I really do have that licence plate).

We will all know after the first reg. season game. If we win that game get your playoff tickets. That is the sign that things are truly different.

Bad things happen to every team. Vick breaks an ankle. Pennington breaks a wrist. Korey Stringer dies. Charles Rogers breaks a collarbone-- twice.

At least 20 of 32 teams will lose a starter for a significant period of time during training camp. Of those 12 teams or so that dodge that bullet, they will lose a starter during the first half of the season.

Cards fans always notice these things because they lack the breadth or depth of talent to recover from those things like other teams do.

I am pretty much counting on the Cards losing at least one of the starting 22 in training cap/pre season.

Sure bad things happen to every team but not on an annual basis and in large numbers like happens to the Cards. If Vic had been a Cardinal he not only would have broken his leg he would have developed complications from the fracture and had to retire.

In my opinion the difference this year is pretty simple.

All other years if we won it was a fluke, a mirage, miracle or simply blind luck.

This year we expect to win and are nervous that it won't happen.

The difference is already there. Win or lose it's already not like it used to be.

There's two differences. Denny Green is coaching and michael Bidwill has much more control. Once Bill started taking a smaller role, good things happened.

If we win on Sept. 11 in NY then there will be no doubt in my mind we are going to the playoffs.

I think he got his info wrong unless there were two of these that happened. I'm pretty sure what happened was Jerry Colangelo helping the cops nailing a guy who tried to steal his wife's purse. I could be wrong, but I don't think two arizona sports teams owners had something like this happen to them in the same foreign country in a timeframe of a year or so.

The parallels are uncanny....

Handoff of team management from father to son:
Jerry to Brian
Bill to Michael

Foiling a purse-snatcher:
Jerry in Paris
Michael in Italy

Great season:
Suns - 62 wins, Western Conference Finals
Cardinals - ??? Division champ, home field playoff!!! :koolaid:

:suns:
:newcards:
