Nowitzki
Dallas Mavericks: Dirk Nowitzki has fallen. But luckily for the Dallas Mavs, he was able to get up. "It's a mild sprain, sort of a seven to 10 day injury," said Donnie Nelson, Mavericks president of basketball operations, to the Dallas Morning News. "He's already been up walking on it." Nowitzki twisted the ankle while competing in the European Championships for his home country of Germany. But don't tell that to Mavs owner Mark Cuban. "International competition is a for-profit big business," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said. "Why we as a league offer up our most valuable players is beside me. It's the equivalent of Microsoft paying Bill Gates to do promotions for and sell Linux software. The reality, though, is that because of the agreement struck between FIBA [the international governing body for basketball] and the NBA, I don't have a say in most scenarios."
Toronto Raptors: There those who will tell you that Vince Carter is back to being his all-star self. But he isn't one of them. "I'm Vince Carter now. I believe I belong here and that's the motivation to come back and play the same," Carter told the New York Post while playing for the National Team. "I actually think I'm a better player now than I was then . . . I'm stronger in the mind, if you're strong in your mind it really enhances everything else. I just feel confident in myself every time I step on the court, as I did then, but it's on another level now. I know I'm capable of doing the things I've done in the past. I believe I'm better than ever."
Golden State Warriors: Any minute now, Calbert Cheaney will become the latest Golden State Warrior. "Hopefully, we'll be able to get something done (today)," said Michael Higgins, Cheaney's agent, to the Contra Costa Times. "It's nothing too elaborate. Hopefully, it's a five-minute phone call." Cheaney played for the Jazz last season, averaging 8.6 points per game on 50 percent shooting.
