The ending to the Padres-Rockies game is a perfect example of why instant replay is needed in baseball.

Holliday clearly didnt touch the plate and the ump even waited a few seconds before giving the safe sign

To me it is the umpire not saying that he was safe but more saying that he wasn't going to call him out on the play.

Kind of reminds me of that Stanley Cup Finals game, I think in Dallas, where the winning goal was scored with a skate in the crease. Everyone knew it should have been disallowed, but no one was going to make that call.

Yep. I don't care either way, but the Pads got screwed. Barrett blocked the plate and Holliday was out.

Brett Hull vs. Buffalo. Good call. Sabre fans will never forget it.

Holliday never touched the plate, but technically Barrett still has never tagged him either. He's not out yet...

I'm not going to cry for the Padre fans. Their arrogant players predicted they would win the division and now they are done for the year.

Tony Gwynn, how's it feel to be so wrong?

He didn't tag him because the umpire made the safe call. A very, very late safe call.

I am dead sure that the angles provided by television could not conclusively say either way. Sure it appears that Holiday's hand collided with the catcher's shoe but did it completely prevent him from touching the plate at all?

Another better question is, would the replay overturn the call on the field? I would have to say no.

In addition, anyone who has watched even the slightest bit of baseball over the years knows that Tim McClelland ALWAYS makes slow calls.

exactly boondock, it would be like the NFL where they need without a doubt to see that he didn't touch, and dust went up in the air and also could have slipped in under barrett's cleat. believe me i wanted that game to go longer, it was awesome, but even with replay the result would have been the same.

He ABSOLUTELY tagged him. He tagged him while the ump was in the process of giving the slooooww "safe" call.

He definitely tagged him, and Holliday was out.

yup. he definitely did. we didn't see it the first time around, but the fourth time they showed it they kept the film rolling and my buddy's girlfriend kept yelling "tag him! tag him! tag him!" (even though she didn't care who won) and then the tag was slowly made.

i also think that it was difficult to see if he grazed the plate or not. the plate was well blocked, but his hand did seem to slide under the cleat and then disappeared behind halliday's body, obscuring our line of sight to see if he got the plate. it could have gone either way, but regardless, i'm sure the ump didn't see it and just guessed.

Actually, he made the move TO tag him but never placed his glove upon Holliday...

In the replay I saw, it appeared to me that Holliday's toe touched the plate after his hand missed it. The ball was loose at the time. Looked like a great call.
BOO to instant replay, and I'm not a fan of either team.

No to instant replay.

Not sure how I feel about it. I don't like baseball enough to care, but the Padres were screwed at the plate.

Once you start doing instant replays for these types of calls, the next progression would be to get instant replays for called strikes. That would totally suck.

If you are the Padres, it is your fault for letting your season come down to that. I don't think the benefits gained from instant replay will outweigh the damage done by slowing down the game.

Maybe that call was umps payback for Milton Bradley, or for the home run that hit the wheelchair and was called a double. :D

I was going to make the same point I've seen the replay several times now and the catcher never tags Holliday because he dropped the ball.

I don't think Holliday ever touched the plate, if Barrett tagged him right now I'd call him out.

Worked for me. The Pads were arrogant all the way through the last couple weeks, and they got their come-uppance. But for Carroll NOT to make an effort to double-tag just in case was pretty careless.

I thought the catcher was Barrett, and we know the Cubs dumped him for being "dumb".:D

I. too, never saw Barrett tag or retag Holliday.

BTW, someone should tell Holliday it is not smart to slide on your face. He might work on that technique next spring.

The last thing baseball needs is to be more drawn out. And exactly where do you draw the line on which plays to replay? NFL penalizes a team for challenging a playcall and being wrong, how could you do that in MLB? The NBA does it just to view if a shot got off becore time expired at the end of quarters and has no impact on the gameplay.

I get the feeling replay would be a huge can of worms for baseball and if you're going to go that far may as well take the ball/strike calls away from the ump and just use pitchtrax.

The reason Barrett(I think) did not tag him was because the ump called him safe as he was about to get the ball. No way Holiday was ever going to get up and tag home plate.

Yes but.... we would lose that tradition of managers and players going face to face for 15 minutes arguing a call that never gets reversed. Would you miss Lou Pinella kicking dirt and throwing bases? Really.

As rare an occurrence it is, yeah I'd miss it. I think the vast majority of lifelong baseball fans, the ones who consider it their number one sport, would be against instant reply of any kind whether they thought Holliday was safe or out.

Two of the things that separates baseball from the other major sports is a lack of clock and a lack of video technology influencing rulings during the game.
