Inter Miami pull off electric Champions Cup comeback to knock LAFC out

Two more teams will book their passage to the Champions Cup quarter-finals this evening as we have matches in Miami and Mexico City.

Here is what has gone down so far.

Inter Miami 3-1 LAFC

Scorers: Messi 35', 84' (P), Allen 61' ; Long 9'

Inter Miami pulled off a stunning comeback to knock LAFC out and book their ticket to the last-four.

The early warning signs for Miami's exit came when LAFC bagged a shock away goal in the opening 10 minutes thanks to some poor Herons defending, which allowed Aaron Long to fire home from close range.

Miami's superstars would always have their say however, and after Lionel Messi initially had a free-kick goal ruled out after the referee claimed he took it before the whistle, the Argentine responded just minutes later with a vintage goal inside the box — meaning Miami needed two more unanswered goals to turn the tie around.

The Herons were halfway there on the hour-mark when Noah Allen put in a hero's contribution, scoring the second of the night for Miami to pull to within one of the comeback.

The drama only ratcheted up from there. Javier Mascherano's side looked to have pulled off the comeback when Luis Suárez headed home from close range, but the referee chalked the goal off for a controversial offside.

In the dying minutes the referee once again intervened, but this time giving a late penalty to the home side after a hand-ball in the box. Up stepped Lionel Messi to have a World Cup rematch showdown with Hugo Lloris, slotting home the apparent winner with aplomb.

Despite a late push from LAFC, Miami held on to pull off the dramatic come-from-behind victory and book their ticket to the semi-finals on a famous night in South Florida.

Still to come
