I'd hadn't considered that their super quick hire of Singletary forecloses possibly superior options. Interesting read...

http://www.pressdemocrat.com/articl...SPORTS09?Title=Niners_could_have_had_Shanahan

For weeks, I wrote the 49ers should not hire Mike Singletary right away. I wrote he’s a good coach, as far as we know, but there might be someone better. I wrote the 49ers should take their time, catch their breath and survey the coaching landscape around the league. I wrote that Singletary would wait while the Niners went through the usual interview process, of course including him.
.....
On Tuesday, the Denver Broncos fired Mike Shanahan, which means Shanahan became available as a head coach candidate — as a candidate for the 49ers.

Is Shanahan a better head coach than Singletary?

Get serious.

Shanahan is miles ahead of Singletary, an unknown, a mere beginner with nine big-league games under his belt as head coach. Shanahan won two Super Bowls. That’s an impressive credential and it merits at least one interview with the Niner brain trust such as it is, except the 49ers can’t interview Shanahan because they rushed into a contract with Singletary for four years and $10 million. This is Exhibit A of how weak 49er ownership continues to be.

There's a point I'm sure, but if I'm a Niners fan I'm still comfortable with Singletary. His ascension has been a long time coming and I don't think he'll disappoint anyone.

I am sure I would hire Shanahan over Singletary. I think he rode Elway's talent for much of his success. Since Elway left I believe he has made several blunders. I think Singletary will end up being a good head coach. I still do not like SF receivers though I feel we should still be able to beat them next year.

I'd much prefer Singletary right now over Shanahan. JMO
As I've said before the one coach I'd consider over Singletary would be Cowher.

Emotional guys like Singletary often get good results initially, but eventually players will begin to tune them out. That's why I prefer a more even-keeled HC like Whiz.

I'm no Shanahan fan, but I'd prefer him to Singletary if it was my team.

They took Singletary for a test drive and liked him. I don't think they have buyers remorse...yet. It will depend on how he does in the future.

After reading these comments I'm not as bought on him as I was. I still like the hire tho. JMO

People should luck up Elway's career numbers before Shanahan and with Shanahan they'd see that Shanahan made Elway a MUCH better QB.

There was no doubt it was easier with Elway and he's been unable to win a SB without him, but there's no denying that he made Elway better.

Steve Young credits Shanahan with making him an NFL QB.

Who made who though? Shanahan holds a .500 record with 1 post season win and 7 losses since Elway retired. Shanahan is average without Elway and I'm sure he would be way below average with the whiners.

Singletary was fine when they were winning meaningless games. What's his reaction going to be when they run into the inevitable 5 game losing streak that happens next year? Does his head explode? Does he rip off his clothes and run maked around the stadium? Who knows how he'll react. He reminds me of Chris Speilman. He took over the Columbus Arena league team a couple years back and went 2-14 or something like that. He changed Qb's about every week. Singletary is the same kind of guy.

I don't like the Singletary hiring because I am a Cardinals fan and think he could be trouble for us. The emotional thing is true if the coach is an emotional guy who yells to hear his voice. They create distance form thier players and never reward, just bash. I don't get that from Singletary. He praises where he needs to, but hold people accountable and is emotional. Those type of coaches last a long time. Heck, just mentioned in this thread is Bill Cowher. Seems to fit that description pretty well. Player want to play for a guy like him. Nolan started out that way, but towards the end I felt he was chaising his tail a little.

As for Shannahan, he is yet another piece of evidence that a good coach can get fired by being a mediocre GM, and nobody does both very well. Some HOF coaches have had thier demise caused by trying to do too much. It will be interesting to see if he demands the same power in his next job.

Sure, and Elway played the best football of his life when well past his prime under Shanahan. Take out the Shanahan years, and Elway's legacy is completely different... he's the guy who put up a lot of numbers, but made a lot of mistakes and couldn't get a SB win. You don't think there's maybe some contribution from each of those guys?

Also, Shanhan's record post-Elway is 91-69...92-72 including playoffs. That's better than .500.

Toward the end of the Coach Mac era, when we had an opening (it was either at LB coach or DC), I lobbied hard for Singletary (i.e. Chicago Bears connection, tough guy, "been there/done that" etc.).

Nothing that dramatic happened since then, but of late, I had watched (with some degree of "woulda-coulda") Mike quietly rise up the ladder to his position as DC under Nolan.

Why did I feel so strongly about Singletary? It's kind of comparable to a QB's "'It' Factor." When I blurred out all of Singletary's good points and weak points, my gut conclusion was that "whatever the "'It' factor'" is....he's got it.

Will he be the next Vince Lombardi? Tough to tell. There are too many variables not in a HC's total control - i.e. weird or dumb management, injuries, competiton within the division, tough schedule, roster problems (i.e. too much to do/too little time), losing too many close games, cap problems, the 3-year "players tune-out tough coaches" factor etc. etc. (Look what happened to Mangini and Shanahan).

But all things being equal, I think the Niners will quickly become a force for the Cardinals to reckon with; because the entire team will take on the fiery, tough, determined quality of its HC.

I remember you being big on Singletary and I agree with you. He will make the 9ers better.

Detroit would have a shot at division champs in the west so its not like the 9ers have to get much better from where they are to contend.

Who knows maybe he'll comeback as the 49ers OC
the same position where he won a superbowl ring:D
