I was reading an article on Denver Rb's(trying to see if I should pick up one of the backups in fantasy league) and came across this. Clarett's contract that he signed contains NO signing bonus! None at all which seems a bit unusual for a 3rd round pick, I'm not expecting a huge one but his deal is very small with lots of incentives. Apparently his agent convinced him that if he outperforms his draft position, the best way to get rewarded is an incentive laden deal.

Did Master P get back into being an NFL agent(Ricky Williams rookie deal) or is Clarett's not quite that bad?

FYI early reports are he looks confused at assignments and blocking/receiving but that he's run really hard and impressed Shanahan with his ability to get extra yards on every carry.

No Russ, I heard the same thing and the opinion is that his contract is crap. As for fantasy, apparently Mike Anderson is #1 there right now, but you know Shannahan, Tatum Bell or John Elway's daughter will prob start Week 1.

Really weird, after all he's been through you'd think he'd want a bonus just to guarantee he has money in the bank. I mean Denver has Bell, Anderson, Griffin and Dayne and all 4 have started in the NFL, there's no lock Clarett makes the roster. If I were his agent I'd have wanted a bonus for sure.

Footballguys.com writer was raving about Clarett between the tackles, great footwork, consistently breaking tackles. Said he's totally outplaying Dayne so maybe the absence of bonus will be a non issue.

clarett's not made smart decisions thus far, what makes you think he'd start doing anything different now?

This guy has gotten more action out of 222 college carries than any other player in the history of football.

Broncos | Clarett Running as Fifth RB
Tue, 2 Aug 2005 12:59:29 -0700

Mike Klis, of the Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos rookie RB Maurice Clarett is the No. 5 running back on the team's depth chart. Clarett has been finishing off his runs during workouts at a noticeably slower pace than the team's other running backs.

I drafted him in mine, but his contract doesn't seam to smart right now. I wonder if he tears up NFL Europe if the contract still gives him incentives.

From what I hear this was all his doing. If it works out it is brilliant on his part. He makes $7M and leaves the selfish reputation behind. Huge risk though given his history of injuries.

The suspicion is they will trade one of the 4 guys in front of him or that he'll beat out Dayne. But I read 2 highly different accounts, football guys said Clarett is clearly outplaying Dayne, and a newspaper in Denver said Dayne has been a big surprise showing much more quickness and explosion than they expected.

both agree that Clarett is very raw and confused about what to do when he doesn't get the ball in terms of blocking or pass receiving. one said he was going down too easily, another one said he was routinely breaking arm tackles and seemed to get extra yards on every carry. That's the Clarett I remember at Ohio State, seemed like he always got 2 yards more than you expected especially in the redzone.

I just don't get the contract, he has to know it's totally out of his control how much he plays because the guys before him are all experienced save Bell and Bell is probably going to be the starter. An incentive based deal sucks if you have no guarantee you're going to get to play a lot.

If the kid is as good as he thinks he is then the contract he signed was smart. One thing is for sure, he will get his chance in Denver.

I think Clarett just signed any deal they threw at him, so that he could shed his selfish appearance and get into camp.
