Saw this at Camelview the other night and was impressed. Pretty damn close to the book from what I remember. The camera shots of the different parts of America were spot on and whoever did the scout location was also on the ball as well.

Emile Hirsch was terrific, and like the guy he played never really became too likeable or too detestable. As in when I read the book, I never knew whether I should feel sorry for McCandless and revere his goals or look at him as a spoiled brat whose lack of common sense doomed him. Hirsch and Penn balanced that perfectly.

Anybody else see this? It's supposedly getting Oscar mentioning.

Don't worry about knowing the ending, most people in the theatre did as well and their experience was not ruined.

It was pretty good. The casting was perfect based on that pic at the end IMO.

Wow.

Read this book a few months back and I finally watched this film last night.

Emile Hirsch first of all is an amazing actor. That guy has a solid resume. Lords of Dogtown, Girls Next Door, and the Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys have all been very solid performances from this guy.

This is definitely his finest acting to date.

After reading the book, I got the impression that that arrogant kid got what he deserved.

Watching this movie humanized his story and Hirsch made this movie amazingly sad.

Great stuff.

I tried to watch this last night. After about 20 minutes, I lost all interest. Turned it off.

Just watched it. Wow, I thought this movie was amazing. Filmed entirely on location too.

Thanks, Mao. I heard Eddie Vedder did some tunes for this. How were they?

Agree. The music in this was outstanding.

Sean Penn once envisioned Leonardo DiCaprio as Christopher McCandless and Marlon Brando as Ron Franz when he first became interested in making the film.

Funny, because I thought Hirsch looked a lot like Leo in certain scenes.
