Since I only vaguely follow your opinion,
what do you think of the Kindle? I got a couple gift cards for Christmas and I'd like to get an e-reader (I have a huge collection of ebooks but nothing to read them on except the computer). Kindle seems to be the best one, although the one thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't read LIT files (those are Microsoft proprietary).
The iPad is too damn expensive.
That's okay, I only vaguely follow my opinion also. As for the Kindle, I absolutely love it. I had hesitated buying one for a few years because I had been anticipating buying the iPad when it came out and figured I could use it for books and comic books (silver age mostly-it's an age thing). However, the ipad's lack of connectivity (and price) scared me away and as the price of Kindle dropped all the way to 139 dollars, it was too cheap to pass up.
It holds up to it's reputation. I can read it easily in just about any light and it doesn't take more than a few minutes to forget you're not holding a book. It's easy to sit back in almost any environment and read one-handed. It's light enough that your hand won't tire and page turning is very functional.
It's everything I hoped it would be with one exception. Apple's foray into the market has muddied the waters and a lot of books are no longer available for any reader. To be fair, I did not do a lot of personal research on this product. I took the work others did in comparing the various e-readers and as I'm sure you've discovered, Kindle wins or at least ties in just about every study.
In the end, I'd say go with Kindle if you're looking for a dedicated e-reader. If you're on the move and you just want one device to handle a multitude of apps, I'd wait for the ipad 2 which has promised some connectivity and a rear camera amongst other improvements. Actually, those things are rumored not promised but I take a good rumor as a promise anyway.
