Hey Kate, here's an idea. It'll take some time to do, but it'll give you a way to store your songs online for free. Sign up for a gmail account or two, depends on how much storage you need. Email yourself to a gmail account w/a song or two attached. Do that over and over and over, until that account is full. Then move on to the next gmail account. Then you'll be able to access your music from any computer, just log into your gmail. Then, when you do eventually get a new computer, you can just download each song onto your new pc. I know this probably sounds like a pain in the butt, but it's free, and it'll give you a way to have an online "backup" of all your music.

I'd go buy a USB external hard drive, and copy your documents folder and songs over to it.

Or get one of the ones that has the "one touch" backup feature and backup your existing hard drive to it.

What are the specs of the machine you are using? You can probably get a copy of Win XP home edition (upgrade copy) really cheap at a student rate at your college bookstore.

I was thinking of suggesting that she get one of those too, but then I thought, she's a college student. Money can get tight. How much do you think one that would work for all her music would run her?

It depends on how much storage space you need.

Here's one that is absolutely huge! 300GB for $230. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144365

Don't need one that big, how about a 120 GB drive for $120?

I'm sure there are better deals out there too. And check the college bookstore, they sometimes have sweet discounts for students.

Its worth spending a little cash to make backups, or get a dvd burner and burn the music to disk.

Trust me, losing data would be a LOT worse.

I'm not sure you are really at risk, I thought you were using a machine from 1999 or something. That hard drive would have been through a lot of wear. But irregardless of the time you have been using your machine, you should always backup your data. I'd hate for you to lose all the papers you have written so far.

wow you know, i never even thought about that. i'm going to need some of those papers for my applications to grad school. i bought one of those external thingies that you can hold stuff, but i think its like 256 mb. maybe i should just get those papers on that puppy asap.

thanks for the ideas though. not sure if i can swing anything in the 100's right now, but i may be forced to. i just always assume my computer will never crash, lol. but you're right, better to be safe than sorry!

Believe me - it sucks to lose all the papers you have worked on. It happened to me senior year.

I've had two hard drive crashes and an accidental formatting. I lost about 50 GB of mp3 the last time, most of which I had backed up. I've still managed to lose a lot of my old undergraduate coursework, some of which I wouldn't mind having to refer to.

Ipod Nano apparently has problems:
http://www.google.com/url?sa=X&oi=n...m/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=171200815

Customers complain that the LCD screens are too easily cracked and scratched.
By Antone Gonsalves
TechWeb News

Apple Computer Inc. is getting complaints from customers that the LCD screen of the recently released iPod Nano, the latest mini-version of the popular digital music player, is easily cracked.
In addition, consumers have complained that the surface of the player scratches with normal use. Complaints have been posted on the Cupertino, Calif., computer maker's own support forum and on a Web site called flawedmusicplayer.com, which was set up by an anonymous user.

Apple officials were not immediately available for comment.

On its own support forum, users complained of having scratches on the diminutive player, despite handling the device gingerly.

"I think Apple is going to have a major problem on their hands when enough of these are sold," wrote a customer identified as Richard Spangler. "They chose a poor material for the Nano ... I have treated mine like a king and it already has a few scratches."

On the anonymous site, customers complained of cracking the Nano screen, despite what they considered normal use.

"I had my iPod Nano for exactly four days before the screen cracked on it ... The iPod was placed in my pocket (alone) and into a backpack over the last four days. The unit was not exposed to what I consider harsh treatment," one customer wrote.

People complaining of the device said they were told the damages were not covered by Apple's warranty. That, however, could not be verified with the company.

Apple announced the thinnest version of the iPod music player nearly three weeks ago. The device, which has earned high marks from reviewers, is 0.27 of an inch think, weighs 1.5 ounces and holds as many as 1,000 songs. Pricing starts at $199.

Why are you people sending $100s on an MP3 Player? I just don't get this Ipod craze

I am with you, I do not get it at all... I have an ipaq that I use for everything, it also plays mp3's just fine, and also plugs into everything an iPod does, plus...

I use it for Word, excel, Photos, videos, wireless internet browsing, company based web orders... and I paid just a tad more than an iPod... Plus it uses windows based apps so it integrates much better with my PC and laptop...

*add*

also with a few 1G cards I can keep everything stored properly, work on one card music on a few and vids and entertainment on another...

I'm with you. I have a Dell Axim that I use for lots of stuff. I'm not really a music fan, but I can copy DVDs onto my Axim, so that's pretty cool.

Although I did order one of the new Dell Dittys because there are times when I just need audio and the Ditty has a good battery life and an FM tuner...so I can have some entertainment while I'm sitting at Cardinal games this season. :p

YAHOOO!!!!

Porn may be on the way for iPods

Playboy Enterprises Inc. and Penthouse Media Group Inc., publishers of men's magazines, may make adult movies for portable video players such as Apple Computer Inc.'s new iPod to capitalize on soaring demand for the devices.

Penthouse is in talks with "a number" of companies that build the players to provide adult videos, Chief Executive Officer Marc Bell said in an interview Wednesday. Chicago-based Playboy also is in talks with new developers, CEO Christie Hefner said.

Playboy and Penthouse, both suffering from slumping revenue at their magazines, are ramping up video production to bolster profit. Apple sold more than 1 million music videos and television shows for its new video iPod, with a 2.5-inch color screen, within three weeks of its Oct. 12 debut. Adding adult content is a natural extension for mobile video players

"When you look at what has driven the emerging technology for media distribution over the last 50 years, it's music and adult content," said David Bank, an analyst for RBC Capital Markets in New York. "It seems like a natural fit."

Playboy shares, up 16 percent this year, added 84 cents to $14.41 at 1:11 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. Apple shares have surged on demand for iPods, sales of which have reached 28 million. The stock jumped $1.89 to $61.84 and earlier today reached a record $62.32.

Apple had no comment, according to spokesman Steve Dowling. Apple does have content that is rated "explicit" on its iTunes Web site and offers parental controls to iTunes users who want to limit which content their children can access, Dowling said.

"Anyone who has developed and is rolling out a platform for the delivery of content is a company we are interested in doing business with, so you can count we will be in discussions with them," Hefner said on a conference call with analysts yesterday, when asked if Playboy is in talks with Apple.

The potential for Playboy from new content delivery devices prompted RBC's Bank to upgrade the company to "outperform" from "sector perform."

"There is substantial potential for Playboy," Bank said. "Playboy content is the kind that is a natural to be able to exploit the new distribution channel. It lends itself to a shorter viewing experience."

New York-based Penthouse was in bankruptcy when the CEO's buyout firm acquired it in October 2004. Bell in September raised $48 million to finance an adult entertainment broadcast network to compete with Playboy's Spice and New Frontier Media Inc.'s Erotic.

"There are a number of portable video players and we are very excited and enthused about working with them," Bell said in an interview. "We are talking to a number of them."

Penthouse, which sells magazines in 12 languages across 40 countries, plans to make new movies tailored to portable video players as well as adapting other movies, Bell said.

Playboy said its magazines posted a loss of $700,000 and fourth-quarter advertising sales will fall 23 percent. Playboy is most likely to reach content agreements with manufacturers including Apple, according to Banks.

"Playboy has the Good Housekeeping seal of approval," Banks said. "Their image is more positive than simply pornography. That's part of why they become the partner of choice. They are reputable in billing management and age verification of their talent. There aren't many brands that share that stature."

Playboy was founded by Hefner's father, Hugh Hefner, in 1953 with Marilyn Monroe as "sweetheart of the month." In the second issue Hefner, now 79, introduced the bunny logo, designed by Arthur Paul. The logo underpins the Playboy brand, which made the company licensing revenue of $5.9 million in the third-quarter.

Playboy yesterday said third-quarter profit rose to $3.2 million, or 10 cents a share, from $1.9 million, or 6 cents, a year earlier. Sales increased less than 1 percent to $80.9 million, missing analysts' forecasts. Sales in the company's entertainment unit gained 3.5 percent to $47.7 million, helped by domestic television and video-on-demand sales.

Wait.. what do you mean? I can't upload video clips that I have on my computer to my iPod?

I was planning on asking for a video iPod for X-mas, and I wanted a video one specifically so I could put my x-files/friends/er clips on it.

Tell me more about the video iPod, Phil.

Does anyone else have a video iPod?

I'm still trying it. They are supposidly making programs for it but so far it's a pain in the ass. I tried putting my RATM (Rage Against the Machine) DVD on there and it took about 5 hours just to change the format. So I'll keep trying if I can find time and let ya know what happens.

Finally found a black 30G ipod at Target. Haven't opened it yet though. I had a chance to buy an Xbox 360. For some reason they had 2 behind the counter, the sales dude didn't even know where they came from.

Great. Brother bought one, sister is about to get one for Xmas.

Dad's even thinking about getting one.

I don't use the video as much as I thought, but I use my iPod AT LEAST 3-4 hours a day.

Can I burn any types of files onto an IPOD if I get one (wma, etc.)? Also, will it take files downloaded from Limewire and other such programs?

I got an iPod video for X-Mas and I'm trying to put my videos on it, but it's giving me trouble.

What programs do you use to convert it? It keeps telling me I need Quicktime 7 Pro or something, which is like 29 bucks. Maybe there is a free program out there that converts .wma vids into quicktime.

Other than that problem, I am LOVING this machine. I can't wait to put all my cd's on it.

One more question. Let's say I upload all my songs on this computer in AZ. And let's say I hook up my iPod to my friends computer in Milwaukee. Does it keep all the songs from AZ on the iPod, plus the songs from Milwaukee? Or will it re-format it to just the Milwaukee songs?

Smart man!

I should have done that sooner. I found a board that was really helpful, and I was able to find a program to d/l that converts the vids. Thanks!

Just for my own knowledge, what format do you have to convert it do? I thought Apple's proprietary software was quicktime (.MOV) Do the IPODs take a different format?
