My son was asking me why they made Iron Fist. I told him, in the seventies martial arts was a national phenomena. I remember all the debates in my school about who was the best martial artist. Kids taking karate lessons all over Yuma. Kids practicing with their num chucks, etc. Looking back, it is a wonder Iron Fist did not have more issues. Remember Kareem Abdul Jabbar being a giant karate practitioner. He was in one of the movies, too.
I am still angry that nunchucks are illegal in Arizona

Batman, also. Learned martial arts and returns home to run his dad's company. However, this seems more like the Arrow. The Arrow was stranded on an island after a ship wreck, learns martial arts, and returns home eventually to run his family's business.

This story comes from a 70s comic book. It's not derivative. The truth is many of the 70s comic book heroes have very similar story lines.

Well, it had to happen eventually. Iron Fist is the first Marvel Netflix TV show stinker. It's bad. I mean, DC level bad--but at least it had full, un-washed-out color lol Just chock full of bad writing and 'how many tropes can we shove into a short series.' Thankfully, I don't think it will mess up Defenders, unless that show has writing problems too.

Marvel isn't on a roll on Netflix anymore. As good as the first half of Luke Cage was, the second half was corny bad. Now this. Ah well. Nothing's perfect, I suppose.

Well the silver lining may be more resources go to Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones. I was really liking Jessica Jones, too. Eventually her and Luke Cage are supposed to get married, at least in the comics they do.

You know what would be an interesting Netflix original attempt?

Spawn

Spawn has never been done right. Ive seen the theatrical releases and also the animated ones. All garbage. Its a very difficult project to tackle, but I have faith in Netflix.

Not sure who made The Tick, but if they can do special effects like The Tick, then they could probably do Spawn.

Well Batman started in the thirties I believe. :)
My point wasn't the timing but rather virtually all comic books from that era came from just few primary origin stories (or combinations of the few).

This is not the best Netflix Marvel show, but I thought it was not too bad. I am on episode 10, and the story line is OK. If you want to see some great martial arts, watch Into the Badlands.

Synopsis: AMC's goal for "Into the Badlands" was twofold: produce a compelling character drama, and introduce the highest caliber of martial arts filmmaking to a weekly, ongoing series. Left in the hands of creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar ("Shanghai Noon," "Smallville"), the series stars Daniel Wu as ruthless, prodigiously skilled warrior Sunny, who mentors teenage boy M.K. during a spiritual journey across a feudal civilization known as the Badlands. With the help of trained assassins like Sunny, the area is ruled by rival barons, and for decades Quinn has consistently outflanked and outmaneuvered his fellow barons to keep the upper hand. His invincibility, however, begins to fade in light of brazen attacks by the newest baron, The Widow, who believes M.K. is the key to her success. As the battle for control of the Badlands heats up, the destinies of the stoic assassin and the impetuous teenager become intertwined.

Watched the last episode. Not much of a cliff hanger. If they do not bring this back I am satisfied where it ended up. The Iron Fist is the least able to control his powers, IMHO. He will have to improve a lot for the upcoming aeries he is supposed to be in.

Only 4 episodes in and I am struggling to watch anymore. Clunky dialogue, the lead is not great and the martial arts is at times AWFUL. I think much of it is on the lead but the choreography is horrendous. Which I don't get considering how great it's been on Daredevil.

I mean, some of those scenes were like watching bad 80's movies where you could see guys pulling punches and if you slowed it down you could see a stunt double with a mustache even though the lead didn't have one.

There is definitely some talented martial artists on the show and some of that shows. Then out of nowhere...it's soooo bad again. The show takes itself so seriously you can't even mask some of the martial arts scenes as just fun a la Into the Badlands (which does it right).

During the episode when he challenges the other fighters, I thought I was watching a B movie version of a B movie version of Mortal Kombat.

For me, I'm on the 5th episode. There is just to much talking, not enough action/fighting. Just slow so far.

That's how I felt too. The pacing is just horrible. Show had so much potential but it is blah compared to the other Netflix shows. Not a fan of their choice for the lead. Should have picked an actor who actually knew martial arts and gone from there. The fight scenes need to be incredible for this character and they are not. I look forward to seeing Colleen Wing fight more than Danny Rand.

Casting: The most important things to consider were not considered. First, the lead actor should have been skilled in martial arts and an actor rather than filling the role with an actor and giving him some crash course martial arts training (it showed). Second, in the comics Luke Cage and Danny Rand were partners for years so I think they should have had any potential lead work with Luke a bit to see how the chemistry was between the actors/characters. Personally, I am not sure how this Iron Fist will mesh with the other heroes, especially Power Man aka Luke Cage. Third, a better lead may not have fared any better if the show stuck to the same plot/dialogue. Underwhelming is a great summary of this series. I loved Iron Fist in the old comics and wish this was better and re-watchable. Regardless, Make Mine Marvel. #Excelsior

This has a bigger problem then casting. The dialogue was clunky, the story wasn't all that great and the editing was borderline criminal at times. Now I have heard the argument well the lead wasn't very good at martial arts but some of the really good scenes between martial artists scenes were edited like someone using Windows movie maker. Not to mention some of the choreography was so bad.

Here is a for instance. I hate the cliche character X losing it on Character Y and just widly beats on your face for about 10 punches too long. Not only that...they pulled that out of the bag twice!

Honestly, they need to do some house cleaning before season 2.

I'm actually enjoying it. I can't put my finger on why exactly, maybe it's my preexisting iron fist fandom. I don't love the lead or maybe the role they've defined for Danny rand. I thought I might in the early going but it seems they are content to make him a naive temper tantrum throwing idiot. I would think the naievity would be okay but that his training would have resulted in something slightly more mature. I can't fully recall iron fists character from the comics too well anymore but this doesn't feel quite right. Still enjoying though. And like Colleen.

Same here. I still like it, but I wanted to love it. I think some of the critics have been way too harsh. The Rotten Tomatoes score is so low. 18% last time I saw it.

I kind of agree with some of what Chap said above. This might cool the jets of Netflix or anybody else slamming out anymore Marvel TV shows.
