the entire island has been evacuated. This is supposed to be a huge eruption which could potentially cool the entire planet for a couple years.
apparently there is also an eruption brewing in Italy which would be the biggest we have seen in over 500 years.... very interesting...suxx for the locals, yes.. but interesting none the less

it is. but history and geology show us we have been through all of this before.

I think our precarious perch will ultimately be disrupted by something from "out there".. ala "armageddon".... as it would take a global effort to actually monitor all that sky for incoming objects,..and what can we actually do to protect ourselves if something that size comes?

back in 1985 an asteroid similar to the armageddon one actually passed between the earth and the moon,...and nobody even saw it until it had passed... no link, just something I read way back then...as cool as the movie was I am not so sure dropping some drillers on a rock and sinking a nuke is actually a viable plan for world salvation, lol

IMO if the human race is going to survive for the long haul we need to start infesting the galaxy

I'm about 50/50 that we off ourselves vs. extraterrestrial forces doing us in at this point. You, Hawking, and I agree that seeding the galaxy is the best guarantee of our species' survival.

saw Independence day few days back and it struck me as that alien was trying to invade the presidents mind,..and he got loose and described what he saw in there..." there entire race, travelling from one world to the next, using up all the natural resources before moving on to the next..."
