Denny Green is just what this team needed. Dictator? When he needs to be but he's also smart, bending over backward not to lose Leonard Davis.

Rod Graves is an organizer and a consensus builder and has the complete trust of management and Rod is thrilled to have been able to hire Denny Green. He's told me so and Rod Graves doesn't play politics.

Rod also has a self-effacing ego and the smarts to let Green play the lead in talent selection. Rod is THE perfect GM for Denny Green - someone who will channel Denny but not interfere with his need for control and visabilty in the press.

Wally, you are so wrong - again. It must be tough being you. :p

Maybe a benevolent Dictator ? I am the ultimate cynic when it comes to the Cards. 45 years of frustration. I want my 45 years back.

It is easy being me. I lead a good life and have enjoyed every part of it. The only enemies I have are on this forum. The rest of the world loves me.  ;)

P.S. It's posts with questions like this that get the juices flowing. Rattle a few cages. Roust the rabble.

I don't see McCown just being given the starting QB position by Green in which he is annointed king of the universe and can't be moved ala LVCARDFREAK's fear of "Plummerism". I think McCown knows he has to work to keep his job. The quick release of Blake was a wake up call of sorts to him. McCown even said he was shocked to see Blake go. And in response, apparently he's working his butt off to learn the plays and keeping in good shape. While appointed starter I think he knows that it comes with an asterisk* Green knows this too, thank goodness. Too bad Tobin and McGinnis didn't. :hulk:

There is one common thread in all winning teams the HC is the dictator. Walsh, Belichek even Vermeil things are done their way. Football is not politics or society. It is not a democracy.
Skkorp I love your take on the DG and Graves relationship I think it functions exactly that way.

Hey DG will make mistakes and you can jump all over them if you want just don't lose sight of the big picture. The key is he will make less mistakes that is what leads to winning. He will also make changes to correct the mistakes he won't stick with them.

I think it's insulting and patronizing for a successful black coach to be labelled dictator when successful white coaches behave in the same way. This smells to me.

Ultimately if DG doesn't win he will be gone. It is as simple as that. He knows it himself.
The media and many fans hated DG in MIN. Since he left he has been replaced with a guy who the media and fans love so what. No playoffs since DG left. Look at M Riley in SD everyone loved him he was such a nice guy - the fans (at least at first), the media, the players - who cares he was a loser.

Is he a dictator? Hell yes he is, as well he should be, at least for the first couple of years.

This team has been so pussified by the likes of Tobin, Mcginnis, Greene Sullivan and Marmie, that we needed someone to come in here and show these guys what football is supposed to be about again.

Secondly the team, and the fans for a large part, have been so neutered by the constant losing that are dictator is what was required to give this team a collective sack, and the confidence to go out and get some wins. .

I feel somewhat validated about my disappointment with the Dennis Green hiring. So far he has violated the CBA with his mini camp violations. He has decided to scrub , what he calls " creature comforts " that coddle players. He seems to be pushing Rod Graves into the basement. This ain't funny people.
Wally I was there and I think you are wrong on all three counts

  1. He didn't violate the CBA, they interpreted it. If the players did not agree with the interpretation they could have complained to the NFLPA. My understand is that his interpretation is common at a lot of teams.
  2. The "creature comforts " he has axed where items that Jake really wanted and are not common at other teams. My understanding is the one most obviously useful, ie Nutritionist has not been axed, they just found a different nutritionist.
  3. As for the Rod Graves bit, I don't believe it. I have seen them together and Rod makes a lot of effort to talk to us. RG does not look like a guy who is being pushed out/down, he seems to like what he has in Dennis Green and seems to talk with him a lot. From the view of an external observer he seems happier with DG than he did with Mac. While he is far to classy to trash Mac (then or now) one can/could infer a lot from what he does not say.
I think they needed a bit of disipline and his system has demonstrated results.

II just cant help but continually relapsing into a state of 'Plummer-ism' where there is no competition, and Plummer is always annointed the starter regardless of how bad he plays.
That won't happen in the future, if Josh doesn't pan out something will be done about it.

The wrong end of a Tequila bottle.
An old coach of mine told me the a team isn't a democracy, it's a dictatorship and he was the DICK. Every decision regarding the team effected him first and foremost, so he was going to have the say. If we wanted to have some input and he felt like listening, fine, but the man at the top made the rules.

It's not a very warm and fuzzy attitude, but it worked, and it has to be that way.

Watched Denny for 10 years in Minneapolis even met him at a Viking training camp. ( My company was a Viking sponsor and I got a special on the field pass and ate lunch with the players)
Denny is not a tough SOB. He believes the team is a family and he runs it as the head. Issues and problems stay within the family. You don't have players complaining to the media, He also doesn't treat them like kids; he never fines players. If they don't buy into his program, he will get rid of them.

Players like to play for Denny. He is a professional and all about business. He doesn't "smooze" with the players. They respect him, not fear him. He wil do well here and put an exciting and winning team on the field. (that is why I bought season tickets!)

Coach Green a "dictator"??

Anyone catch the comments about Bears' players AND Redskin players' grumbling about the "intense tone" of their recent camps?? Has Coach Gibbs been successful?? I'd say that's an under-statement. ...And Lovie Smith?? Has his defense done pretty well the past few years. This is football!! NOT pansy-ball!! If you're not mentally & physically ready to play, somebodys' going to take your head off, and not feel sorry about it one bit. Personally, if I was able to do something I luv AND getting paid a kazillion bucks to do it, I'd make sure that everyone connected knew how much I appreciated it. Losers are ALWAYS pissin' & moanin'. Truth is the other guys/team WANTED it more!! ...and that's why they win. Coach Greens' track record suggests he understands what it takes to win. GO CARDS!!

You weren't there neversaydie, when the players risked their careers for meal money by going almost full contact with no pads.

Guarantee all contracts and I'm with you. Let 'em hit.

But the NFL guarantees nothing but we'll cut your injured ass as soon as we can.

a successful BLACK coach.
This is burying your head in the sand. Are you saying racism no longer exists. I personally am colour blind I don't judge people by skin colour unfortunately the day when everyone is like that has not arrived. There was scientific study done that showed the NFL was racist and did not treat black coaches the same was white coaches. The NFL accepted this and instituted changes. The Lions were fined for their racism last year and this year there are more black coaches in the NFL then ever before. Colour plays a role in coaching they have special programs and initiatives because of colour.

And DG has been attaked racially many many times. When racism is elminated in the NFL and
society I wouldn't have to indicate that their is a doublestandard on how coaches are viewed.
This attack smells of racism as well. Look at Parcells he made Newman their #1 draft pick his personal water boy last year!

DG is a successful coach period. DG also happens to be black and he has worked hard to get other blacks the chances that have been denied them. Change is happening slowly finally. But to deny racism exists is silly.

Why just mention Coughlin he turned an expansion team into a winner and just got hired again this year. Yes he just got hired this year! The cap killed him in JAX. Why not mention other tough coaches like Parcells. Parcells made Newman their #1 draft pick his personal water boy I can just imagine what you would be saying if DG did that!

What's the opposite of "pussified".

Probably the answer lies somewhere in Lars post.....and it's in BIG letters.

Vikes fan. You usually make good points, but trying to turn this post into a race issue is Bull****. Was I a Green fan when he was hired? I was ambivalent. Since then I think that he has pushed all the right buttons, and in my previous post I supported his actions. But for you to try to use the race card here in response to Wallyburgers post really, really irks me.
Face the facts, we Cardinal fans are so starved for success that a blue midget in tights who can make this team successful would be embraced. :D

Thanks for explanation. Lets analyze for a moment. Players Union negotiates and wins no pads/no hit agreement " as in Collective Bargaining Agreement ". Teams cut injured players. So maybe coaches who violate this clause and expose players to injury aren't dictators, just cheaters or anarchists.

:whip: :soapbox:
