I know Eric asked about it from a personal standpoint, but considering that Marion may be having problems with it, this is not really "off topic".

Yes, I too could do a google search and pour through medical journals and probably get totally lost. But if someone has done the hard work, it would be interesting and useful stuff from a basketball standpoint.

But even if it wasn't basketball related, it would be nice if someone could help.

I don't have all that much use for doctors but one thing they are generally useful for is diagnosis.

I guess we've had different experiences. Not only did I have two doctors fail to detect when my Achilles was completely gone -- in spite of the fact that I told them that's exactly what I suspected -- but my mother had to self-diagnose her cancer. One doctor after another told her she was making it up, and finally she convinced one to run a test, and sure enough, she was right. Taking responsibility for her own body saved her life.

AZZenny, thanks very much! I'll check out footsplints.com and your other suggestions. And sure, we'll work a doctor's visit in there somewhere.

Eric - I know you're in LA, but if you're ever in the Phoenix area I do know a good orthopedic surgeon that specializes in foot/ankle, particularly sports injuries. His name is Gus Armendariz - he actually performed Stephon Marbury's ankle surgeries when he was a Sun, as well as mine when I ripped three ligaments playing basketball.

Was it Randy Livingston?

In all seriousness there's a relatively new form of therapy called 'Active Release Therapy'. I heard about it from a friend of mine who had raved on and on about it. I had treatment done after a particularly bad ankle sprain but it could have some benefits for you.

Unfortunately it's new enough that you may have troubles finding practitioners but it's alternative worth mentioning.

Thanks for the info. Since my surgery and lengthy rehab, my ankle has been fine, but if it ever recurs I'll check it out. I'm all about alternative forms of therapy - my chiropractor is my best friend.

Apparently you're in a world with no google. I heard one can find more answers there than a Suns forum...could be a tad more reliable too.

You can thank me later!

you know what's cool? doing a google search doesn't seem to preclude an individual from also asking others, on a message board or otherwise... in fact, when many people google search for medical advice, they search for forums where people give first hand experiences.

to judge someone for simply asking for help...wow

I read rolling a tennis ball under the arch of foot can relieve it a bit.

I had this condition and the doctor took an imprint of my feet to make a fibreglass arch-support insert for my shoes. Completely cured it after about 4 months. You don't even feel the inserts in your shoes even when running or playing basketball. I think you can go to one of the Foot Solutions stores and have them made without going to a doctor.

For what it is worth. I began having similar symptoms with my feet about 3-years ago. Today, I am fine. My solution?

Stretching in the morning - feet and calves.
Never walk around bare foot - especially on tile and concrete (this felt like daggers piercing my feet)
I stopped jogging for a time.

Most Importantly - in my opinion - I purchased a new line of shoes, and continue to purchase them. Timberlands' Smart comfort fit shoes. I purchased dress shoes, casual shoes, and sandals with this system. It cost a bit, but I could actually walk and stand for longer periods of time (I work in an office environment, and need to dress for business... Tennis shoes are not an option). Today, I don't feel the pain in my feet any longer, and I have begun to jog again... but not as much... that is another sad story.

Good luck. When your body aches, life is not as fun.

We do the financial planning on the P&R forum, and there IS a forum for Body and Health, where people get and give whatever info they have. There's a tech forum for asking about computer problems or suggestions. Books, movies, etc. Food forum for local restaurant and recipe reviews. -- I've found all helpful at one time or another.

Think of it as similar to Consumer Reports' reader feedback on product reliability, store service, etc, on a small scale... anyone who ONLY makes medical or financial decisions based on a sports message board may have some limitations in judgment, but how is getting suggestions or input a bad thing?

Hope your wife finds relief -- that was one of the most extremely uncomfortable things I've ever had -- it got to a point I could not walk at all. Tucson Devil is right -- although a night brace is often the fastest way to get relief, over the long haul, stretching (and strengthening), no bare feet, find the right shoes (and that's not always clunky shoes like you might think -- I found some cool Italian-style sporty suede slip-ons from Privo, which is a brand from Clarks', that look like they wouldn't give much support, but the insole is heavenly.) Keep in mind that insoles do wear out and need to be replaced at least annually if the shoes get worn a lot; same with orthotics.

I've experienced some failures in doctor's diagnoses, too, and heard of many others, which is why I said I find them generally useful - I certainly don't regard them as oracles. I quite agree with the philosophy of taking responsibility for ones health and if I think a doctor is wrong, I don't hesitate to move onto another. Of course, I start by googling the internet nowadays and I usually consult my ex-wife, who is a retired nurse practitioner, because she has good poop on many doctors besides being a good diagnostician herself. Heck, my old GP (of 25 years) isn't bad at all but it takes two weeks to get in for a chat.

While I didnt have specific foot problems I found a pair of shoes that did wonders for my back and feet. Theyre called z-coils

You must be registered for see images

www.zcoil.com

They look like goofy futuristic shoes but they work wonders. They have a stiff orthotic outsole that really helps your arch. The spring makes it feel like youre walking on pillows. Nurses, hair stylists, anyone who is on their feet 24/7 swears by these things. I used to have lower back pain and sometimes couldnt get out of bed. Just putting these on and standing I could feel the tension off my back. Foot pain and knee pain sufferers swear by them too.

I saw them in a magazine forever ago and laughed. I thought they were ridiculous and wouldnt have bothered. Then I was in old town scottsdale a couple years ago and saw a store for them. I went in and tried em on, walked out with a pair on. While theyre more expensive than a regular pair of shoes, theyre cheaper than getting a custom orthotic insert and theyre a great conversation piece. You would be surprised by the amount of your friends who have some sort of lower body pain that may even want to 'test drive' your shoes.

p.s. pokerface, google + advice from people > google
Stop ankle-biting, negative attention is not healthy.

Thanks, SUNSD. I've seen those shoes and had a similar reaction, but I've also noticed people wearing them happily.
