I do not think that MIA's trick was that successfull.

Brand may be not worth the max. (he is a complementary player too) but at least he is close.
Odom is definitely not worth his nearly max. contract.
I'm not sure that he is worth more than the mid-level.

So with their trick MIA acquired a highly overpaid, injury prone player with drug problems.

The real "trick" would have been that:

Offer a mid-level contract for Odom and after the max. offer sheet to Brand.

See this is one of the problems I have with everybody just looking at Shawn Marion's statistics. I do think Lamar Odom was overpaid last summer. However it has nothing to do with his game on the court. I think he was overpaid because he is injury prone, and he is a stupid off the court player.

Lamar Odom is shooting just 41.5% from the field this season. He is turning the ball over a lot... averaging 3.4 turnovers per game so far. But if the off the court trouble and injuries were not an issue I think Lamar Odom is worth more than Shawn Marion. Miami's offense runs through him. He can play any position because of his size and quickness and ballhandling skills.

They are both overpaid. I don't think there's any doubt about that. I just think that on the court there is a much better chance of Lamar Odom earning his contract. He is a potential franchise player while Shawn Marion is not. That's not so much a knock on Shawn Marion as it is a complement to Lamar Odom.

What are the signing restrictions on the draftclass of 2002?

I would rather have Kwame than Chandler because of his health and I would rather have Kwame than Curry because Curry seems to be a chronic underachiever that plays with no heart.

Realistically, they tried to structure the deal to discourage the Clippers from matching for Brand. It didn't work. With Odom, the Clips were not that high on him in the first place and weren't prepared to go very high. Miami may have overpaid.

i may be wrong but i thought chandler and curry were restricted free agents. everyone from that draft class (gasol, richardson, brown, etc.) that got there option year picked up are restricted free agents. am i wrong about this?

[/B]Plain and simple. If we don't land Kobe, there really isn't another FA I would want for a long term deal. Use next season to let our young guys play more, and maybe try and absorb someone else's contract. (Teams under the cap can absorb another players contract, without having to match numbers) [/B]

I agree with this 100%
