Amazon.com Essentials: Director Frank Capra (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) took home every Oscar in the book (well, okay, all the major ones) for this seminal 1934 comedy starring Clark Gable as a hard-bitten reporter who stays close to a runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert) rather than lose a good story. Funny and sexy, the film is full of memorable scenes often referred to in other films, such as the "walls of Jericho" (a mere bedcover hung on a line down the middle of a room so opposite-sex roommates can get undressed), and Colbert's famous flash of thigh to stop a speeding car in its tracks. Capra's brisk, urbane brand of wit was a perfect complement to his populist faith in the common man (in this case, Gable's character), and that inspired combination makes this film both a spirited entertainment and an uplifting experience. --Tom Keogh

I recently watched this. Great movie. The dialog of this film is outstanding. The hitchhiking scene was hilarious. I love the slang used in these old classics.

This was the first film to win the Oscar "grand slam" (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Screenplay).
Is often credited as the very first screwball comedy.

Premiere voted this movie as one of "The 50 Greatest Comedies Of All Time" in 2006.

In 2007, the American Film Institute ranked this as the #46 Greatest Movie of All Time.

I thought this was really interesting:
The unpublished memoirs of animator Friz Freleng's mention that this was one of his favorite films. It has been claimed that it helped inspire the cartoon character Bugs Bunny. Three things in the film may have coalesced to create Bugs: the personality of a minor character, Oscar Shapely, an imaginary character named "Bugs Dooley" mentioned once to frighten Shapely, and most of all, a scene in which Clark Gable eats carrots while talking quickly with his mouth full, as Bugs does.

Saw it in Film Study. Thought it was alright...Clark Gable was really good and some of the situations were really funny, but I liked movies such as Double Indemnity and Robin Hood more in that class.

Best class ever! :) Didn't know I'd like older movies so much, but that just adds to the greatness of that class. I recommend it to anyone who hasn't gotten their fine art credit yet.

Yeah, this is one of my favorites of the Capra canon, without the usual treacle. Can't really compare it to "Double Indemnity," Capra and Wilder are like two polar ends of the Hollywood spectrum.
