Seeking long-term deal, Cards offer linebacker $9.7 million tender

“Karlos is someone else who had a great year, he has become a great leader on the defense,” Graves said prior to exercising the tag. “We see him as a core member and one we want to extend with a long-term deal.”

Good. I am happy to see he is not going anywhere.

The Cardinals can let that situation sit, and work on Warner.

Thought this was as good a thread as any.

Another D guy Antonio Smith was asked by Wiz to give the Cards a chance to match any offer he might get in the open market. Smith seemed to say he would.

All according to Somers recent blog.

Absolutely a great move. Hopefully we can workout a long term deal soon. If we were to workout a deal in a few weeks could we tag another player? What is the deadline for tagging players?

Again the question comes up can a team play a straight 3-4 with both DEs at 285? Almost every team I've checked has at least one DE around 300. Guys that play DT in the 4-3.

This is great news, I believe that Smith would rather come back instead of taking the money and running. I know there isn't a lot of love on the board for this guy, but all he has ever done is improve year to year. I will always have respect for a player that doesn't take his position for granted.

I like this also. Let the guy know you really want him. Of course, he may have some preference other than the Cards. Hope not. Other teams may not like this and as a result may not wast their time if Antonio is likely to stay with the Cards with a matched offer. Antonio's agent is no going to let the Cards keep him with the same offer. He will want a bump you cn bet on that.

If Davis is our DC and he continues his idea of a "Predator D" Smith would be ideal IMO.

But I agree if we move to a straight up 3-4 he just might not fit.

I think he will take the money and run. He is just giving the Cards an opportunity to match it. I think they already have an amount in mind and wont mind saying no if it goes past that line. Which it very well could. But then again this might be a case of a bad economy and players not making nearly as much as they thought just like the Baseball offseason.

I too love this guy. I don't know his work ethic in practice, but I always saw him practicing his "hand work" on the South endzone post for an hour before the games.

I think he will take the money and run...but when teams look at how inconsistent Smith was and he isn't all the great at stopping the run...not sure he will get an offer of more than $3-4M a year.

Smith is a sneaky player...he flashes big-play ability at opportune times and then lays in the shadows for stretches of time. There's no question that when both he and Dockett came to play last year, like the Dallas and Atlanta games, the Cardinals were super tough to beat.

What's your take on him, Joe?

IMO he's the type guy you need or find on good teams. He just come to work everyday. Maybe not the best worker but there are days when he excels. I hope he comes back.

Like you I think he is super streaky. Either he is really good, or it is like he isnt even playing. He is 50-50 as to what guy you will get. And Dockett is the same way but he is more 70-30, really good games to no show game ratio. I will say this about Smith as an intangible. He always has energy and I think others feed off of that. He also keeps some levity in the locker room which takes stress away.

As for the 1st paragraph that is exactly the type of player some team pays way to much money to. It happens every year. All a guy has to do is show flashes and some team or teams will fall in love. Take a look at Pace or any number of the WR's that have recieved big deals the last two to three years. Unfortunate but its true.
