Wanted to make sure you read this.
Jack Ramsay is probably not right on everything he says, but I think he has a good insight into the NBA and the players.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Scott Vinson (Portland, OR): What kind of team do you think would benefit most from signing Tracy McGrady? I'm not convinced he's the kind of player that can help take a team to the NBA finals, no matter who he's playing for. What's your take?

Dr. Jack Ramsay: I agree. I don't think he is a franchise player. He's a great offensive player and I think he's a competitive guy who wants to win and can play in a team game. But I think he's a contributing player. He could help a team win it all, but I don't think he will be the main ingredient.

This also.

Jr (San Diego): Do you think if Kobe and Tmac traded spots, we would be talking about Tmac like we do Kobe? Remember Shaq made Penny, and Eddie Jones All Stars.

Dr. Jack Ramsay: No. Kobe is a much more versatile player. Not as great a perimeter shooter as TMac but a better defender, playmaker, driver to the basket, etc. There is a big gap between those two players.

I just posted in another thread that the guy from the Bloomberg News that I heard on the radio yesterday said very similar things about Tracy McGrady and Kobe Bryant. I still think that it is just impossible to compare the two of them because of the difference between the rest of their teams. Let's not forget that Tracy McGrady also has a bad back.

BTW, I agree that at this point Kobe Bryant plays better defense than Tracy McGrady. I wouldn't say he is necessarily a better playmaker though.

It is easier to evaluate a player's defense than his playmaking. From the outside you don't know what the guys is SUPPOSED to be doing. We know that Phil wants Kobe to pass more, but it is doubtful that Orlando wants T-Mac to passs to guys who can't play.

Also, everybody talks about last year's poor Orlando Magic team, but we can't forget that Tracy McGrady lead that team in the previous few years to the playoffs in the Eastern conference. He had better teammates then, but they still work anywhere close to what Kobe Bryant has around him in Los Angeles.

What's funny is that Tracy McGrady himself has hinted to this very same thing that Ramsay describes. What Ramsay is disputing is the media's perception of Tracy McGrady, not his perception of himself.

And that is what he always does (not just concerning McGrady).
