The NAU football team has cracked the top 20 in a pair of national preseason polls.
The Lumberjacks, who return 11 starters, including senior All-American defensive back K.J. Gerard, are the 18th-ranked FCS team according to The Sporting News. They come in at No. 20 in the USA Today Sports Weekly's poll. Appalachian State, a team NAU pushed to the limit in Week 3 last season before eventually falling 34-21, is ranked No. 1 in both polls.
