I'd prefer to hang on to Mantei. If Valverde has some of the problems he did in double AA, we'll need a solid closer if we are to compete. If we can't compete, Matt might be worth a lot more in July when other teams that are desperate for a closer to make their run are shopping.

He may be worth more in July, but he also may be injured and non-tradeable. Valverde will be fine as the closer, I think he proved that last year. Also, if he fails, we have Bruney, Koplove, and I can't think of the other who could probably do the job.

Bottom line: If you can trade Mantei now, you do it.

I emailed Ed Price of the east valley tribune to ask him if there were any rumors that he heard concerning Mantei.

He told me no, and that he was betting Mantei would be a Dback next year.

Absolutely no team in baseball wants Mantei, he is brittle and owed 7 mil

Mantei's comment the day after our season ended that he'd played the whole time with excruciating shoulder pain has to have cooked any team's interest. Bet he wouldn't have said anything if he was a free agent.

Of course not! Though the comment could still come back to reduce his market value a bit in 2005 since all MLB teams know the media games players play.
