If it was really about snap counts, wouldn't they go with Budda? Maybe Jalen is just the best guy for the job?
Sounds like Budda is being considered as well...in typical, this responsibility goes to MLB, but hard to plan on a guy calling all the plays when he isn't on the field.

Remember when he was anointed play caller/starter last year before training camp?

Here are 5 teams from last season with non MLB/ILB green dot wearers.
Baltimore
Cincinnati
Chargers
Rams
Bucs

Only one team had a losing record at 8-9 and both teams in the Super Bowl are in there.

I have no clue how Zaven will perform this season, but not wearing the dot is the least of my concerns. I'm more interested in seeing if he'll be a 3 down player. If he's not from game 1, then I'm ready to call him a bust. But I'll wait and see what week 1 looks like and let the best player wear the green dot.

The fact that he isn't wearing the dot is the reason you should have concern about him being a 3 down player.

Again - I don't think it has anything to do with best...more who will be on the field for the majority of snaps. Our #1 snap guy last year was Jordan Hicks. If Collins isn't handling the majority of those snaps, that a really bad sign.

That's all assumptions and you could very well be right. I'll wait and see! It's much better for the soul, I promise you that.

It is telling though that the Super Bowl teams from last year are doing it differently and we seem to be following suite.

I’m alone, but I still got higher hopes in Zaven than I do Isaiah.

I kind of agree with you but my eternal optimist is still hoping that this is the year Simmons breaks out and becomes a star.

But I'm much more inclined to think this is the year we decide ok he's not an ILB where do we play him?

Cards site has an article out saying Simmons has been working quite a bit with the safeties in camp so far.

not saying he can't do some good things there but it does make me wonder if we're going to see some sort of hybrid defense where we have 5 DB's on the field regularly and Simmons is one of them?

The base defense today has 5 DBs on the field regularly. The person this is going to hurt (in a contract year, no less) is Byron Murphy, who's most successful when he's moved inside.

Gotta find a way to get your best 11 players on the field. Simmons is probably better than Antonio Hamilton.

Right I meant with him as the 5th DB. so he'll technically still be a LB but lining up further away. You can kind of see the idea, move him back so he has more time to read the play. Move Budda closer to the LOS so he can make more impact plays. ANd just hope the other team doesn't run the ball.

I dunno. I think our best 11 right now against 11 personnel is:
DL
Allen - Fotu/Lawrence - Watt

LB
Kennard - Simmons - Collins/Vigil - Golden

DB
Murphy - Thompson - Baker - Wilson

one of the frustrating aspects of last year's D was that run oriented teams would go 13 personnel -- - Cards would respond by swapping a d-lineman out for a DB --

and then it was 5 OL/ + TE vs a front 6 that was pretty light

maybe this is about not swapping out a DL so you have a heavier front 6 -- 3 DL / Golden / Kennard / Collins with Isiah as the box safety/ 5th DB

Me too I'm just saying it sounds like it may be Simmons playing further back like a safety and Budda playing closer to the LOS like a LB.

That's my take at least. Here's the link I found it and a quote from Kliff about why. I bolded the part that to me implies why they're doing it and where Simmons is going to be lining up.

Despite the questions surrounding the decision to not keep Simmons fixed in one role, head coach Kliff Kingsbury says it all boils down to maximizing Simmons’ talent.

“I don’t feel like we’re stunting his growth (at inside linebacker),” the head coach said Wednesday. “I think the way we’ve adjusted our defense is going to play to his strengths.

“He’s a guy that when he sees the ball … from a little bit farther away like he did in college and just attack the football or be on the line or blitz like you saw him do against Dallas, he can play fast, not overthink it and just go,” Kingsbury added. “When he’s been in that role, he’s made big-time impact plays for us and that’s what we’re going to try to do just expand that role for him.”
