Cardinals unveil brand-new way to lose

The Arizona Republic
Sept. 25, 2006 12:00 AM

Say this much about the new Cardinals: They keep finding new ways to lose.

Other than that, not much has changed around here.

Incredibly, the honeymoon in Glendale is over. After a stunning 16-14 loss to the mediocre St. Louis Rams on Sunday, the Cardinals are 1-2 and engulfed in familiar chaos. By now, it should be obvious that new buildings alone won't bring championship banners.

Coupled with Arizona State's crushing loss at California on Saturday, the first weekend of fall turned into yet another precipitous fall for our football teams.

"I don't think I've been more disappointed since I've been here," Cardinals head coach Dennis Green said. "I'm convinced of it. I don't think I've been more angry since I've been here. And I've had some bad-ass days since I've been here, believe me. But none of them compare to today."

Alas, just when you thought this team had drained the well of unhappy endings, here we go again. This time, after a gift-wrapped turnover by the Rams granted the Cardinals an enormous reprieve late in the fourth quarter, the home team promptly threw away the opportunity for a relatively easy, game-winning field goal.

This time, the goat was quarterback Kurt Warner, who fumbled a clean snap from center Alex Stepanovich and handed the game back to the Rams, a team Warner once led to two Super Bowl appearances.

It was Warner's eighth fumble of the season and his second bad game in succession. He also had three passes intercepted by the Rams, two occurring near or in the opponent's end zone. It was so bad that the affable veteran was booed as he left the field, and in the coming days, there will be great public outcry for the Cardinals to start their prized rookie, Matt Leinart.

"I'm not Coach Green," Warner said. "I'll let Coach Green make that decision. Of course, I know what I would do, but that's not my decision to make."

The end of the game was also marred by delay and confusion. The Cardinals tried to use a little-known rule to attempt a very long field goal with no time left on the clock, only to have the whole thing negated by a penalty.

It was a fitting ending to a game they didn't deserve to win, and by then, the problems were only getting started.

After the game, new running back Edgerrin James blistered offensive coordinator Keith Rowen for poor play calling, claiming that he didn't get the ball enough in the second and third quarters.

James has yet to rush for more than 100 yards in any of the first three games and is befuddled by how often and how quickly the team abandons its running game.

"One day, my importance is going to be realized," James said. "I hope it's not too late."

Lost amid all the mistakes and the gut-wrenching conclusion is a much bigger problem. The Cardinals have played one good quarter of football all season, and that was the opening period against the San Francisco 49ers in the debut of Cardinals Stadium.

Since then, the offense has been dormant, the defense has been overly stressed and fans have begun to grumble. Over the past week, the Cardinals organization has been widely criticized for sitting on $10.7 million in unused salary cap money, especially after moving into a stadium largely funded with public dollars.

After this loss, much blame should fall on the Cardinals coaching staff. With an emphasis on keeping core players healthy, the team didn't work that hard in training camp. The lack of preparation is showing.

The Cardinals also have committed 27 penalties in three games, with many of them coming at the worst times. That's the hallmark of a highly undisciplined team. Finally, Green's sideline maneuvering has left much to be desired.

"We've got a million excuses," James said.

And now they've got an upcoming road game against the powerful Atlanta Falcons.

"If we don't get our minds right, they're going to put about 40 points on the board against us," Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett said.

Not exactly the sound of a playoff team in progress. Guess the new era will have to wait.

I really don't think it's the play calling as much as the execution. In fact, we don't know what the play calls are much of the time because Warner audibled out of the called play a number of times to take advantage of the 1-on-1s with Boldin and Fitz (as he should, IMO).

Cut our TOs in half and you have a solid win. Hell, eliminate just one TO and you at least have a win.

Pull your head out of the sand my man, you're suffocating quick.

That entire game sucked. We were lucky to have the opportunity to try and win at the end. Yet we, no, the team, found a new way to invent the word suck. As a matter of fact, as I was pulling away from the stadium yesterday, I swear I heard the sound of a really large vaccum cleaner......

Actually, I think I have a pretty clear view of the game:

~Warner killed us with TOs: That's why we lost. It's that simple.

You seriously don't think if Warner doesn't turn the ball over one less time we don't win?

If the team is losing faith in the coaching staff then its time for the vets to step it up and show their leadership qualities ...

We have to hope that they can get it together before next weeks game ...

Warner did hurt us bad with the TOs ... the staff should have checked him out better after that hit he took .. you could see that his eyes were glassy and they should have pulled him out and made sure he was Okay .. he was never the same after that hit and even if he said he felt okay they still should have checked him out due to his history of concussions ... I believe this had a lot to do with his poor performance ...

I think it is time for a TEAM MEETING and a QB willing to call an audible when the obvious is called from the sideline...our whole section was calling the plays we were running and most of them were drunk...ya think maybe paid professionals on the other sideline might have figured it out too? What a friggin JOKE!

Rewatch the game. That isn't the only thing that lead to the loss. It was a circus of bad plays, bailed out by some substantial individual plays that even kept the Cardinals in the game. For every two steps backwards, the team took one step forward to keep hope alive in the fans.

Rewatch the game......

I have. I still say that if Warner didn't give the ball to the Rams 4 times we win. I don't understand how you can say otherwise.

I sat in my section, watched the d-line waltz, watched the lb's over-persue, watched the d-backfield concentrate more on making the highlight reel hit than on actually covering a wr. Watched a supposed savior rb put it into high gear about 10 times, watched a "coaches-boy" wr with supposed hands like velcro drop easy passes, watched inept play calling where the word tight end has been lost, watched over paid, overweight behemoths be shoved around like kindergarteners on the jr high playground, and lastly... yes, watch a qb whose time has come and gone, run for his life, have flash backs to his wonder years, and forget that the premise of being an athlete is to win the game.

That is how I can say otherwise. And it's just my opinion. All you other "experts" on the board can make all the excuses you want. I'm tired of excuses. I have paid good maney year after year to expect more. I want to see professional sports. If I wanted to hear a bunch of excuse making whiners, I would stop by the friendly nieghborhood Kindercare.

I'm by no means saying we were excellent in other facets of the game, simply that we would have won -- ugly or no -- by simply NOT turning it over one less time.

By the way, for all of our defensive faults, we did only allow 16 points. A fairly spectacular feat considering we gave them the ball an extra 4 times.

The defense was solid yesterday. Heck even the O-line gave Warner time and opened holes. This loss was not a team loss it was a Warner loss. I was there and most of the fans I spoke with had pretty much the same impression. Yes, the Edge was pretty much left out in the third quarter. What bothered me more was the Q was on the sidelines with 1.48 left to go. Not that he would have made the play different, but you keep your best player ijn the game, in the huddle and on the field.

I agree with what you are saying. There is only one reason we lost this game. Not protecting the football in the redzone. It makes me sick just thinking about it. However if the Cardinals can put this horrible loss behind them I think they still have a chance.

Pull your head out of the sand.

One guy was responsible for that loss. One guy left at a MINIMUM 9 points on the field, at a maximum 17.

We kicked the Rams ass in that game, and one guy had two picks in the End Zone and one bobbled snap in money territory with the best kicker in the game set to kick the winner with no time on the clock.

The defense gave up 16 points. 16. We have superstars on offense at all the skill positions. We can't put up 17 points???? Nope...not when one guy turns the ball over 4 times....3 of those in scoring position and the third setting up the other team in scoring position.

And no, we didn't play a good game either. TEs weren't seen, Edge open as a dump off all day long. Some big plays given up. But that IS football. We are good enough to win that game by a healthy margin. We aren't good enough to turn the ball over 4 times in scoring position for us and for the other team.

We let an inferior team beat us in our house due to the play of one guy (who in addition to the picks and fumbles also was the guy who missed the open TEs and who didn't dump the ball off to Edge).

turning the ball over is what the cardinals have done best for the past 30 years that i have been following them. they quit the turnovers and stupid penalities then they could actually win some of those close games. warner has been what plummer, blake, and mcown have been for the past 11 years. a turn over machine. it is time to correct this problem. if this is the kind of play the cardinals veterans are going to give us, then i rather see a rookie or younger player get a chance. that means to start matt leinart and other players if necessary. i do know the cardinals need to replace stepanovich. they need to give someone else a chance.

I watched the game last night when I got back and it was after that helmet hit with Witherspoon that they got a close up of Kurt's face and I swea he had at least a small concussion, he sort of just laid there on his back and his eyes looked funny. A friend of mine called and asked if I thought Kurt looked tired and I said I thought he was dazed! After that 2nd quarter was when all of the other bad plays started! The coaches should have checked him out after that hit!!
