Dave McGinnis had a ton of respect around the league as well. So did Vince Tobin.

Whisenhunt is now tainted with the Cardinal brand and horrendous results for extended periods the last 3 seasons. Of all the Cardinal HCs since Coryell only Joe Bugel got another HC job and that for only one season. Maybe CKW can break that pattern but it won't be easy.

Maybe. Neither of those guys were on the Competition Committee, though, which IMO is the real measure of the difference between "beloved" and "respected." I don't think that anyone respected Dave McGinnis as a defensive mind. He was more like (as I've been saying for years) a homeless man's Mike Singletary (although Singletary is the one who acts more like a homeless person).

Tobin got wrapped up in the 2-14 2001 Detroit Lions team, which sealed his fate in the league.

I don't know much about Gruden aside from his resume and the interview.

All I know about Gruden was what I saw in his presser. To say I was underwhelmed would be an overstatement. In fact I kept thinking, "This guy is interviewing to be Head Coach? Over Horton?"

Denny Green was co-chairman of the Competition Committee. I'm not sure how respected he is around the league these days.

Coach Mac's Waterloo was that we didn't develop existing talent as much as needed to on his watch. I also had a major issue with his policy of drafting guys "one round earlier"than necessary (to make certain we got the guys we wanted). Result was an overall decline in roster talent until we transitioned to a Big Board/modified BPA approach.

Tobin's MO was colored Beige - very conservative/little proactivity. (I always felt that Tobin and Graves suffered from the same liability).

In 1994. I don't know if he was on it while with the Cards. Dennis Green was the head of a really good organization while he was running the Minnesota Vikings.

He just wasn't that interested in working hard when he came here.

I got one, which some are already saying, "FOR THE LOVE OF ...HIRE HORTON ALREADY!". The football gods are seemingly doing all they can to save us from ourselves and hire Horton. I say this team rolls with a little faith, instead of long though out stupidity, and hire Horton

If you don't hire Horton, I don't see how you can keep him as DC. The team was divided last year over the coaching staff decisions. Players under contract seemed focused on getting out of here as soon as possible. If you don't hire Horton, it's hard to imagine him being cozy with the new HC/offensive staff. I'm sure he'll be a pro, but we're not talking about an otherwise happy locker room.

Because he's still under contract? I like Horton, but like most NFL teams, I'm unsure of whether or not he's ready to be an NFL head coach. Clearly, he's plan C at best here.

If they hire someone else, and he's such a baby that the relationship is untenable, his odds of being a head coach in the future go down dramatically.

Winning will cure all that ails this team, unfortunately in this division with the HC choices left available, things are looking pretty grim. (No pun intended)

Horton with an established OC that has a track record of success I'd be fine with, but Horton with a newbie is a pretty frightening proposition.

There's that Catch 22 situation. If the guy doesn't like it he's a baby. If he keeps his mouth shut and accepts it he doesn't have the moxy (for lack of a better word) to be a head coach.

Obviously, everyone's a big boy here, but - human nature being what it is - there's the very real risk of egos being bruised and there's a narrow diplomatic path to be walked to keep the locker-room happy and productive.

Yeah, I would imagine it would be perceived mainly as being a pro and swallowing his pride, but maybe not.

Yeah because you win games at the podium

According to that logic Belichick would never win a game.
