Report: Taylor calls news conference to discuss future

Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor has scheduled a news conference for 11:30 a.m. Sunday, the Miami Herald is reporting.
Taylor is expected to to tell the media what his agent has been saying all along -- that he would like to be traded by the Dolphins to a contender.

The Dolphins, who are upset that Taylor spent the offseason on the TV show "Dancing With the Stars" rather than in South Florida working out with teammates, weren't planning to have Taylor on hand when they hold a mandatory minicamp June 6-8.
"I'm under contract with the Dolphins," Taylor told The Associated Press Wednesday after playing in a pro-am for the Principal Charity Classic, a Champions Tour event in Iowa. "...Football doesn't start until July and training camp, so I'll be all right. I've been in L.A. and so far removed from it. Like I said, I'll deal with that when I get there."
Taylor returned home to South Florida to host his own charity golf tournament Sunday and Monday. He had been in California fielding acting offers after finishing the reality show.
Miami coach Tony Sparano said last week that Taylor isn't expected to take part in any team activities through training camp

imo, Jason Taylor would make the Cardinals a contender. He is wanting to go somewhere like New England or San Diego.

When I saw the alert on ESPN this morning that Jason Taylor had called a news conference to announce the inevitable, I was wondering how long it would take the usual suspects to call for us to trade for him.

swd and vinny did not disappoint, getting the jump on us all by declaring their lust for him several hours before his announcement! That is impressive proactiveness.

He's due to make 7.5 mil this season. I dont think we can afford him w/o giving something up in equal value

Thought about that one. Sounds like a good fit. Taylor is a true 4-3 DE.

Vinny, don't NE and SD play mainly 3-4 schemes? How would Taylor fit there? I don't see it.

Agree with TJ. Taylor carries a big salary and Parcells is going to want something decent in return. My guess is Taylor may be surprised at how little interest he'll generate from NFL GMs.

Tampa is a good guess.

What about Indianapolis?

Darkhorse: For some reason, I also think he'd look good in a bears' uni.

Bears? Hmm. Maybe. The Colts do not bring in high priced veterans and never seem to trade away players or draft picks. They home grow the entire team.

Taylor won his defense MVP in 2006 the same year that Saban was trying to run a hybrid 3-4 defense, similar to the one we run by the way, mostly rushing from the weakside like Berry and Laboy will be doing this year. So why don't you think Taylor can play in a 3-4 defense considering he was the best defensive player in the league the year he played in a mostly 3-4 defense.

Yup, in his more recent years he's been in the two-point more often than any point in previously.

Because I was uninformed and expressed an unfounded opinion based on vague assumptions, having watched all of about one Dolphins game in two years.

It's the offseason and I'm slackin' a little.

Sorry, I don't pay to see players who quit on their team

i.e. Kobe Bryant 2006 playoffs

I hate to be the one to interject reality here, but doesn't this statement pretty much eliminate the Cardinals as a contender for Taylor even if we could afford him?

He's not going to come to AZ, no way no how, not yet. I still think we're one season away from being able to attract marquee talent. We have to prove we can win before we're going to start to peak interest of top tier players. Not to mention, I don't think he's what we're looking for. The Cardinals have made it pretty clear that pass rush is what they need up front, and that's not Taylor.

:doi: How does this statement make any sense?

Taylor has averaged over 12 sacks per year for the last three seasons and 10.6 sacks per season over an eleven year career.

Count me as a guy against the addition of Jason Taylor, if it was a realistic possibility (which by the way it's not). There simply isn't enough cap room for his salary. Plus where would he play? OLB? Aren't there already more than enough capable bodies at that position? Haggans, LaBoy, Okeafor & Berry aren't at Taylor's level, but they'll put up decent numbers and won't cost near as much as JT.

Not to mention he's already stated that he only wanted to play one more season. Unless the Cardinals consider themselves as 'just one player away' from a championship, it's not worth it, at least in my opinion.

Despite reports that teams such as the Eagles, Saints and Buccaneers have engaged in trade talks with the Dolphins, we hear that teams running a base 4-3 defense ultimately will not be willing to make a suitable offer. Taylor may be listed as a defensive end on the Dolphins' official roster, but in reality he's more of an outside linebacker who's best-served playing in a 3-4. Such was the case in 2006 when he won NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors. A porous run defense forced Miami to play Taylor as a traditional D-end in '07, and Taylor was a liability against the run throughout the season. He certainly could be a nickel pass rusher in a 4-3, but the idea that he could be an effective, every-down lineman at this point in his career is unrealistic — especially considering his weight has plummeted to around 245 pounds after his dancing days.

Thanks Joe for answering Skorpp question to me. Bottom line is Jason Taylor is still producing at a pro-bowl level. He not a long term answer if there is such a thing as a long term answer in the free agent era. He is way better than what we have now.

I thought he fell off a lot last year, but I misread his stats. I watched a few Dolphins games, and he didn't really seem the same. Could have been the result of playing for such an awful team, that has to be hard to stay motivated.

Still, I don't think he'll play here.

I just can't help but ask if this is similar to Ricky Williams quitting on the Dolphins, which Taylor was extremely vocally negative about. Think about it. Jason Taylor and his agent want that movie/TV deal and have for a long time. When he was drafted in the 3rd round, 12 years ago, his agent ( who is still his agent) told him his career would be after football. Sounds like he is ready. His one year and done proclamation pretty much guarantees him a buy out or a one sided trade to a contender for a bag of kicking tees. If Jason could get to New York or L A, he would probably play, but other destinations and he cashes in on " Dancing With the Stars". Jason Taylor does not make the Dolphins a contender. Hew is of no use to them.
