We can all agree that these picks can't fully be judged for many years, but what is the fun in all of that waiting? The people want to know who won and lost on the first night of the 2025 NFL draft.
Six candidates immediately come to mind, including a pair of quarterbacks who seemed to be jockeying for position as QB2 over the last several months. Whether or not either of them actually wins anything will be determined at a much later date. For now, we have one winner and one loser, for lack of a better term. But this draft is about so much more than just two quarterbacks, after all 32 teams went to the podium. Well, 32 players heard their name called at least.
Here is how day one's winners and losers played out.
After so much was made about the potential of Jaxson Dart going in the first round, it happened. The New York Giants moved back into the first round after securing Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick and grabbed Dart when many felt it would be Shedeur Sanders.
Not only does Dart have the security of being a first-round selection, but he doesn't have to be thrown to the wolves immediately with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston ahead of him on the depth chart. He can sit and learn from savvy veterans before he becomes the franchise quarterback.
There is a real possibility that Shedeur Sanders will land in a good spot for him professionally. But for now, someone had to make the wrong side of this list. Sanders was a potential target to go to the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, or the Pittsburgh Steelers, but none of them came calling. The Giants were the only ones who selected a quarterback.
Sanders could end up in Cleveland anyway with the Browns having the No. 33 and No. 36 selections, but don't discount the New Orleans Saints snagging him with the No. 40 spot. It will continue to be a wait-and-see approach as the Sanders wait for this situation to play out in Texas.
After it felt as though Travis Hunter to Cleveland was a foregone conclusion, the Jags loaded up to make a run at the top-rated prospect in the 2025 NFL draft. Instead of calling the Midwest home, Hunter will head to Florida. He was once committed to play for the Florida State Seminoles, but that never came to fruition, but now he can officially make his way to the Sunshine State.
For the Jaguars, they get another weapon for franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence to throw to. On the other hand, the team also gets some help for a defense that was absolutely putrid against the pass. Hunter's instincts when the ball is in the air are off the charts. Expect plenty of opportunities for a pick-six next season and beyond.
Chicago landing here isn't a shot at the pick of Colston Loveland, but more about who they were hoping would be there at No. 10. The Bears could have used a star running back as they continue building that young corps on offense with Caleb Williams at quarterback. There was hope that Ashton Jeanty would be available, and he would have been had it not been for that pesky Pete Carroll.
The selection of Loveland could be a headscratcher given they just signed Cole Kmet to an extension before the 2023 season. Not to mention, I graded Tyler Warren a bit higher, but it essentially comes down to your flavor of ice cream. The Bears can still get a really good running back on day two.
Jordan Love has to feel like a million bucks after the Green Bay Packers snapped a 23-year streak with their first-round selection. Finally, for the first time since 2002, the team drafted a wide receiver in the opening round of the draft. Somewhere, Aaron Rodgers is probably flipping tables at the sight. Now, Love gets to focus on building a rapport with his new weapon, Matthew Golden.
Golden will have to learn the "Go Pack, Go" chant, but he has some time to get used to it. The newest Packers WR wasn't even born the last time Green Bay selected a wideout in the first round. It last happened with Javon Walker, who only had one great season with the Pack before he was traded to the Broncos after four seasons. Let's hope Golden lasts a little longer.
The newest Philadelphia Eagle said it best: "The rich get richer." Campbell becomes the latest defensive weapon from the SEC to join the Eagles. It is especially worrisome for the rest of the NFC East after they are coming off a Super Bowl victory, where the defense looked utterly dominant.
Campbell joins a front seven that already has Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith, and Nokobe Dean from the Georgia Bulldogs. There are several others as well. The NFC East division better hope they have enough offensive linemen to deal with the waves of top-end defenders that are coming their way.
