Williams eyes return to NBA
Phoenix, Toronto have made contact

By RACHEL CARTER, Staff Writer

RALEIGH -- Former Duke basketball star Jay Williams said Thursday that he plans to return to the NBA next season and has talked to a couple of clubs who are interested in him.
Williams, who graduated from Duke in 2002, was in a serious motorcycle accident in June 2003 while under contract with the Chicago Bulls. Under terms of his contract, he was not allowed to ride a motorcycle.

Williams, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, was hospitalized for three months with a broken pelvis and leg. Williams, the No. 2 pick in the 2002 draft, averaged 9.5 points and 4.7 assists per game in his one season with Chicago.

The Bulls and Williams reached a contract buyout agreement worth $3 million. Williams is now an unrestricted free agent.

Williams, 23, spoke Thursday at Broughton High School as part of the national "Got Milk?" campaign and spoke to students about the importance of a good diet.

As for his career, he said Toronto and Phoenix have contacted him, along with other NBA clubs. Williams chose not to come back yet and is moving from his Durham home to Chicago to get himself closer to playing condition.

"It's going to be good," Williams said. "I think it's going to happen by October."

Williams said he has worked out with individual players but that he won't play a game until training camp begins in October.

He's a minimum risk guy. I don't see a problem with picking him up. If he sucks, then we let him go. The interesting thing is that this seems to imply that we probably shouldn't expect to see vujanic in a phoenix suns uni (although I guess I never really did in the first place). Too bad, he seems like a great shooter and a decent compliment to nash.

Let's not jump to conclusions. The article didn't say when the Suns contacted him. Maybe the Suns contacted him early in the season thinking it was a low-risk one-shot deal for this year. Maybe they contacted him when Leandro didn't look anything like a PG. Things have changed since then and the contact could've been the Suns looking to pick up once promising talent on the cheap.

Very few Duke players ever do anything worthwhile in the NBA. Other than Elton Brand, most are mediocre pros.

magette too - boozer as well - Battier is a solid also. I think you're thinking is more the way of the early Coach K years before he started getting the serious serious talent.

Boozer seems to be doing somewhat good.

Grant Hill, minus bad wheels, not so bad.

Exactly. Grant Hill was undoubtedly a top-five player in the NBA before he had the ankle problems.

I had the skills competitions from this year's McDonald's All-American game on TV yesterday and Jay Williams was one of the commentators. I thought he did a great job. I was thinking that if he never gets back into the NBA he could definitely be a college or NBA commentator somewhere.

Elton Brand has been a loser on every team he's gone to.

Grant Hill jacked up his ankle and never reached his potential.

Battier was the college player of the year and doesn't even start.

Magette was supposed to be a star and never has.

Hurley, Lattner, JWilliams, Trajon Langdon on and on.

Williams had some huge games as a rookie. A triple double against Jason Kidd.

I am happy to read this. I suggested several times to sign Jay Williams if he returs. Low Rist but potentially high reward.

Give him the down payment on a house and a make-good contract. I really have no idea why people would be dead set against this. Are you really so enamored with the Suns bench you would be against bringing in the former No. 2 pick in the draft to see what he could do?

Magette would be a star on another team. As it is, he's on the Clippers. And he's pretty good.

Battier is good, but you're right, he's not a superstar.

Part of the current dilution of talent from Duke comes from two things: 1) The players come out too early, and 2) They play in a team oriented system so that the players that come out early don't really understand the individualism that exists in the NBA. JJ Redick is a great player, but he'll have a tough time surviving in the NBA.

Why does nobody here any any love for Danny Ferry, the man was a force behind the arc and wasn't afraid to mix it up with whoever got in his way. Now that was the way you play Duke basketball

Wasn't Yao the first pick in that draft? Oliwakandi came out the same year Bibby did.
