Maybe the Suns training staff could rejuvinate Williams as they did McDice.

Yeah, we could sign him to a one year minimum deal, our staff will heal him, and then he'll sign a multi-million dollar deal somewhere else.

Williams had some huge games as a rookie. A triple double against Jason Kidd.

I am happy to read this. I suggested several times to sign Jay Williams if he returs. Low Rist but potentially high reward.

Well, well, our German friend makes a rare appearance! :p

Very few Duke players ever do anything worthwhile in the NBA. Other than Elton Brand, most are mediocre pros.

Skkorp - isn't it REALLY very few COLLEGE PROGRAMS produce anything worthwhile in the NBA? Seriously - look over the last 6 years or so and you'd be hard pressed to find any team (besides UCONN - with Rip Hamilton, Jake Voskhul, Okafor, Butler, Gordon and even going further back than that - Ray Allen and Donyell Marshall) rivaling Duke with Brand, Maggette, Boozer, Duhon, Deng - all solid NBA pros. Some programs are top heavy: UA - Bibby, Jefferson, Arenas; UNC - Vince, Jamison (and on the wayyyy outside Haywood); Kansas - with Pierce and then lower than him - Raef, Gooden, Pollard and Collison - but in reality with all the Duke bashing - in context of what college basketball programs turn out on the whole, they are still one of the more impressive ones getting guys to the pros and having them contribute.

Seriously - find me another top notch program that in the last six years has put 5 quality NBA players in the league.

Duke has a tradition of great college players. But Coach K doesn't recruit for the NBA, he recruits college players.

cheesebeef would probably be proven correct if we looked at each top programs, and where each player was chosen in the draft. I'll offer up my own team to sacrifice :).
Say what you want about our program now, but it was tied with Arizona for the winningest record during one ten year stretch.
For the sake of brevity, I'm not going back to the Joe Klein era:
Off the to of my head,
Todd Day 10th or 11th pick-bust
Lee Mayberry first round bust
Oliver Miller 25th pick-you know
Corliss Williamson-16th pick great college player but a situational bench player in the NBA,solid pick at 16th
Scotty Thurman-great college player. Beat the shot clock to win Arkansas a National Championship. Signed w/agent and went undrafted.
Joe Johnson-10th one of only 2 or 3 lottery picks to pan out in that draft
Janerro Pargo-Undrafted and doing well for himself at Chicago-continually improving.

So, our best team with Day, Mayberry, and Miller were all busts. Our Championship with Williamson produced 1 solid NBA player and one "lesson" to not sign with an agent if you don't know you are getting drafted.:)
And when we went on a terrible downhill slide we produced our best NBA player at least since Sidney Moncrief.

So when we were playing "forty minutes of hell" at our peak, we produced busts.
The Williamson team (Nolan Richardson referred to them as playing forty minutes of "heck" because college teams just could recruit as deep) produced one solid role player and one guy who screwed up.

The team that won us the SEC Championship got beat by 12th seed Miami because JJ got scouted (Brandon Dean won then MVP of the SEC Championship mainly because nobody knew what to do with the late arriving JJ except double and triple team him-Dean made it only to the Globetrotters). And Pargo was a shooter who just refuses to play himself out of the NBA.

So the players from our heyday were all busts (But Miller was a weight problem from being a great center-He gave Shaq hell in college).

Corliss was on a weaker team that won it all and is the only one off that team to have a productive NBA career.

And the Team with Pargo and JJ weren't very good. But produced one of the better lottery picks that year and one of the better undrafted rookies.

Now that I look at what I've typed, I can see how players get overrated by being on good teams. So maybe that's Dukes problem.

But I bet accurate statistical analysis would show them as having the same success rate as anyone else.

Plus these days, alot of the guys are coming out of highschool... wonder where Amare and James would have gone for instance..

Where's that website? I would love to see it. I tried finding one like it a few months back and couldn't.

nah - I thought about Stack and Sheed but they go too far back for what I'm talking about because back in those days - more often than not the Dukies were busts. Stack and Sheed were already a full decade ago(yes - you are old). Also - when talking about the Cats, I left them off because they are topheavy and Luc and Iggy haven't really proven anything yet(especially Luc).

Honestly - throughout the years - you want the most solid pros over the last 15 years - just pick a guy from UCONN - Ray Allen, Donyell Marshall, Scott Burrell, Caron Butler, Rip Hamilton, Voskhul, Emeka Okafor, Ben Gordon - goodness - that would be a tough freaking squad in the NBA today!

New game - but together - of all the guy's playing right now from the best college programs in the land and what would be the best team? I say with that group up there you'd have to go with UCONN.

For many a year, only North Carolina had more players in NBA than Arizona in the last 10-15 years, maybe longer... I haven't heard much about that lately but I'd bet it remains the same.

Arenas
Bibby
Terry
Jefferson
Iguodala

I'd take Jason Terry over Luke Walton, for the 5.

Williams report off

A published mention of Suns' contact with former Chicago Bulls point guard Jay Williams appears to be misleading.

In a Knoxville News-Sentinel article, Williams mentioned that Toronto, Phoenix and other NBA clubs have shown interest in him.

It was news to Suns personnel, who have not had any serious discussion with Williams about joining the Suns for camp before next season.

Williams was drafted out of Duke by Chicago as the second overall pick in the 2002 draft, the same draft in which Stoudemire lasted until Phoenix's No. 9 spot.

Williams averaged 9.5 points and 4.7 assists as a rookie, but a motorcycle accident in June 2003 hospitalized him with severed nerve in his leg, fractured pelvis and torn knee ligaments.

Let's not jump to conclusions. The article didn't say when the Suns contacted him. Maybe the Suns contacted him early in the season thinking it was a low-risk one-shot deal for this year. Maybe they contacted him when Leandro didn't look anything like a PG. Things have changed since then and the contact could've been the Suns looking to pick up once promising talent on the cheap.
Nice call, Gaddabout.:)
Always pays to question the sporting media.
