I have to admit that I haven't personally seen Jeff Blake play in a number of years. My question is, everyone says that he throws a really good deep pass, but since a QB throws about 10 short to intermediate passes for every long one, how is Blakes accuracy and arm strength onthese balls?

He can lack some touch on short passes at times, but he never lacks arm strength on outs, comebacks, and other sideline routes.

His deep ball really is a thing to behold, he has an uncanny knack for hitting receivers in stride and putting the ball where either the WR will catch it or it will be incomplete as opposed to allowing a DB to make a play on it.

Word!

I remember watching him when he played with Cinncy, it was like watching Madden on the playstation! He had Darnay Scott and Carl Pickens, and all they had to do was run a fly route, and Blake would get them the ball, like you said, in stride! I hope our reciever corps and Sully take advantage of Blakes ability instead of saddling him with a silly-a$$ short passing attack!

Putting Blake in a west-coast offensive scheme is like an 80 year old driving a Mustang with a Boss 302 in Sun City!

I have one question on Blake and it may be because I've never attended a game at Sun Devil Stadium. Blake throws a real high long ball, lets his WR's run under it that's why everyone loves to play with him the ball is easier to time and catch. But is playing in Arizona with the ever present sun going to be a problem with that high ball?

I recall a couple of balls last year that McAddley seemed to lose in the sun because they hung up, will Blake's higher trajectory be impacted or is the sun largely a non factor in terms of getting in WR's eyes?

The guy is not a 65% completion QB but he gets the ball downfield and in our system he's the perfect type of QB because he hits the deep ball. Our whole scheme is run the ball force teams to bring their safeties up and then throw over the top. Now we just need someone to throw to (-:

I think you're worrying too much, Russ. The sun in SDS will always be a problem but it's a problem for both teams and it won't be any more or less so with Blake.

Your last statement......having someone to throw to......is a much bigger concern to me right now that if our guys will have the sun in their eyes.

Another point in regards to the sun:

When the city of Tempe built the practice facility for the Cards they did something very smart. They placed the practice fields at the same angle as the field at SDS. The Cards are used to playing with the sun and its impact as opposed to other teams coming in.

Blake just needs some people to catch the ball.

I think that we have the horses already. Our recievers have the intangibles (speed ,hands, and the intestinal fortitude to cross the middle). Route running can be taught.

Would I like to see the Cards pick up some legit NFL starting WR's? Yes.

Is it as high a priority as getting DL's and LB's that can get after the QB or a World-Class Center? In my opinion, no.

True, WR is the main worry. I guess it just dawned on me Blake has basically played in cold weather stadiums or domes much of his career so I wondered if the sun would impact his effectiveness with that high trajectory.

I am thrilled we signed him I think he's the perfect "bridge" QB until either McCown or someone else is ready to be the QB.

Don't all football fields (and practice facilities) in NCAA division I and the NFL run north-south?

I'm not picking a fight, just asking...:)

Not to my knowledge about N-S fields. I just know that the practice field was angeled the same way as SDS.

Some Fields are East-West and some North-South.

San Diego (QualComm) is East-West.
Washington (FedEx) is East-West.
Oakland (?) is North-South.
SDS is North-South.
Seattle is North-South.
San Fran is North-South.
St Louis is North-South.

You guys are right,Blake needs someone to throw the ball to.Because alot his so called perfect passes were because his 2 receivers were very good at adjusting to the ball.In fact,Pickens and Scott were two of the best WR's in the league at getting to the deep ball and pulling in the catch.I don't know the stats but i'd like to see how many deep balls he completed with Brandon Stokely and the boys in Baltimore or when he was in NO with no weather factor.I'm not saying he isn't a good deep passer but it's not like he's refined the art of it or anything like it.As Russ said,he hangs the deep ball up there for awhile. That allows the good WR's to make a play on it.The not so god WR's will get that ball picked off or it will fall incomplete.

To clarify I don't mean he hangs it, just he throws it up higher and leads the WR and lets him run under it. he doesn't do the Bledsoe deal where he rockets the ball 50+ yards on a line. Bledsoe is remarkably accurate that way but most QB's can't do it.

Look at the numbers on Travis Taylor with Redman and with Blake, he basically made Taylor go from 1st round disappointment to budding star. We just need someone for him to do that with here.
