49ers | Garcia Suffers Back Injury - from www.KFFL.com
Mon, 21 Jul 2003 21:27:06 -0700

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Garcia (back) will not be ready for the start of training camp on Wednesday, July 23, according to the Sacramento Bee. According to head coach Dennis Erickson, Garcia suffered a protruded disk in his back while working out with a personal trainer last week. Erickson, who found out about the injury last Thursday, said he did not know how much Garcia will be able to participate in the first week of training camp. "It's not going to be season-ending by any means, but we will just have to take it slower right now," Erickson said. "He had the MRI and he has some pain and spasms, so we will just have to wait and see."

Attention all Cardinals Defensive lineman, and linebackers. Get out your notebooks and jot this down now! ( I know it is horrible, and no I don't wish for Garcia to be hurt but this is football)

I don't wish him any harm personally, but I really want the Niners to crash and burn this year so all of their smug fans shut up. I sooooooo hope TO leaves them after this year for several reasons.

What an idiot.

The guy was lifting weights and hurt his back, if you recall a similar incident eventually ended Grutt's career you going to call him a homo too?

FWIW, you're a homo, homo sapiens sapiens to be exact.

Garcia was having a terrific minicamp all reports were his arm was 100% healthy and he was throwing the ball much better than last year, this is just another reason why I now think the 49ers are in for a big dropoff this year no way a back injury isn't going to impact Garcia's play.

Tough break.

Who is their backup? Third-string qb?

Thanks. I think you're right. Any idea what other qb is on their roster?

They drafted Brandon Doman from BYU last year. They cut McNown so he's gone. They drafted Dorsey from Miami this year, so you can see if Garcia can't play they are going with Rattay and 2 very inexperienced backups.

Rattay might turn out to be an effective, but not great starter, but the dropoff would be huge.

If Garcia is hurt even for 5-6 games, the Niners will have a losing record.

I'm familiear with Dorsey of course, but never heard of Doman. Is he a gunner like most BYU quarterback?

he's a little guy, not much arm strength, I suppose Ty Detmer would be a fair comparison although not nearly as good a college player as Detmer was.

I think he was a 5th round pick(?) but not positive.

I think Rattay is a reasonable backup but like Krang said if he's playing several games they could be in real trouble. Remember one of the selling points Erickson is making as a coach is he wants a more "vertical" offense, so while still the WCO, the intent is to stretch the field more this year. Garcia was showing much better arm strength this year than the way he finished last year.

The weakness with all their QB's is arm strength, I think Rattay's arm might be about equal to Garcia but Doman and Dorsey simply don't have the arm to stretch the field.

I've seen a lot of Rattay in the preseason and he can either look really good, or really bad, he just doesn't seem to have a lot of consistency, they brought in McNown last year really hoping he'd take the backup job, but he was awful and then had surgery.

49ers | Garcia Injury Update - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 22 Jul 2003 06:35:01 -0700

Updating previous reports, Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Garcia (back) is expected to be held out of early training camp practices. After experiencing back spasms, an MRI taken revealed a protruding disc. "It's not going to be season ending by any means," head coach Dennis Erickson said. Garcia has never missed a regular season game due to injury.

I've had a protruding disc for about 10 years now. It never gets better. Garcia is going to have chronic reoccurrences of back spasms. With the amount of torque a QB puts on thier spine, not to mention the torque D-linemen put on it to, this will be a problem for the 49ers.

Ya think the personal trainer who was working with him when he hurt his back is looking for a new job?
