Confirmed the Jets are interested in Mason. Could mean that Jerricho Cotchery is traded or released. #nyj

Fall back option if we miss out on the Braylon Edwards Sweepstakes?

What's the obsession with Jets WRs. We sign Stuckey, we pursue Edwards, and now we're talking about Cotchery?

I don't think Cothcery is in the plans. He's more in the mold of Roberts and Doucet. I think the Cards are interested in Edwards because he gives us the deep speed threat that we currently lack.

Braylon Edwards doesn't have any deep speed. He ran a 4.45 40 at the Combine, and I doubt he's gotten faster in the intervening years.

Edwards is able to create long completions through body position and leaping ability. He's much more in the mold of Plaxico Burress and Larry Fitzgerald than he is Randy Moss--who had elite speed to go with body control and leaping ability.

Unless the Cards are planning on re-making their offense from a timing-passing offense to a play-action deep ball offense (that IMO doesn't play to Kolb's strengths), signing Braylon Edwards doesn't make a ton of sense.

You don't think Edwards could potentially match his production from last year? I know it is a different offense, but doesn;t he potentially add more than Roberts or Doucet, if he is signed soon enough and for the right money?

Meh. Edwards was the only legit passing target in his offense for half the season when Holmes was on suspension.

It depends really on the offense that we'll be running. I think that coming here is a bad fit for Braylon, but he'd be better at running those outside routes that we were asking Stephen Williams to run early in the season before he was overwhelmed by the game.

The issue for me is that if you sign Braylon Edwards, you're forced to start him and give him the ball 60-80 times a year. I don't think that Edwards is as effective running the mid-range inside stuff that Breaston was good at and effective doing. So, as a replacement for Steve Breaston, I'd rather go with Roberts or Doucet.

If we're going to change the offense to what I would prefer to see run, I think that Braylon Edwards could be a good fit. But I don't foresee that happening.

Signing someone who has true no. 2 abilities and takes some coverage off of Fitz... makes sense.

Breaston was not a true no. 2 W/O. He was a jumped up no. 3. and that's what we have on the roster right now. Disparage Edwards, if you will, but he is a legitimate number 2 w/o.

Q: Why then are they pursuing Edwards?

I don't care what he ran at the combine. He's only averaged under 15 yards a catch once in his career(14.7) and last year 7 of his games he averaged 19.5 or more yards per catch. In 4 of them he averaged more than 26 yards per catch. But go ahead and stick to his combine time instead of actually how he plays the game.

I agree, but I don't believe that Edwards thinks he is a legitimate #2 WR. The X and Y receivers in a lot of offenses run very different routes and have different responsibilities. I think we want a guy who can run Q's old routes and be an immediate outlet and chain mover. These are not things that Braylon Edwards does well.

Why did they pursue Bryant McFadden, Travis LaBoy, Rod Hood, Al Johnson, Alan Faneca, and Joey Porter? The a priori argument that because the Cards want him he fits the mold that he'd play in is not convincing to me. Obviously, the Cards don't want him that badly, or else he'd be signed by now.

I AM TALKING ABOUT HOW HE PLAYS THE GAME. You're the one looking at his stat sheet; I'm the one talking about how he puts up those numbers.

Braylon Edwards is a homeless man's Larry Fitzgerald. Fitz is also a very good deep threat, although he doesn't have elite speed. You'd be asking Fitz and Edwards to be running the same routes, not complementing each other the way Breaston and Q did with Fitz.

That's not really true. Edwards' production really didn't change much when Holmes came back from his 4 game suspension.

In the first four games, Edwards had 1, 5, 2 and 4 receptions.

In the final 12, he had games of 5, 4, 1, 3, 4, 4, 2, 2, 1, 8 and 6 receptions.

His time without Holmes did not do anything to pad his stats.

Also, with the additions of Housler and Heap, I'd argue that we're going to use those wideouts on more fly patterns than we have in the past. I'm guessing the offense could look quite a bit different than it has in the past...otherwise, those are wasted additions to the team. Somewhat ironically, The Engineer didn't really utilize the TE in the passing game for us

Both Q & Breaston were No. 2 WR's opposite Fitz, yet their styles were quite dissimilar.

I respectfully disagree. Heap is a good mid-field intermediate threat, and a good seam route runner, but I don't think that at this point in his career he'll draw much defensive attention away.

I don't think we'll see more fly patterns if only because I don't think--and I know you'll disagree with me based on a foggy memory of it happening once or twice maybe--Kolb has the arm to throw those jump ball passes that work for Fitz (and Edwards).

With Fitz, Edwards, and Heap on the field (I don't expect to see much from Housler this season), then you basically have three guys running fly routes and no one to open up the underneath. That doesn't make any sense conceptually, either.

Not really. Q was more physical than Breaston, but they're both catch-and-run guys. What they did when the ball was in their hands was different, but the way they got the ball wasn't particularly.

Does the "K" in "K9" stand for "Kaustic?" (yes, I know I'm misspelling it)

I think you must have me confused with someone else. I've not touted Kolb's arm strength.

My point was simply that the TE position has largely been ignored in the past and this offseason we've gone out and gotten two distinctly pass-catcher types at the position. That indicates to me that we're going to do something different than we have in the past. You disagree. Cool beans. But be nice.

Heap will not be running fly routes...

Fitz's highest and best use is running intermediate routes (be it over the middle, outs, hooks, and skinny posts)... Yes, he can go can catch the deep ball, but, he has never and will never make a living off of that.

Therefore, we NEED a true deep ball threat. A guy who can stretch the defense and open up the underneath, short and intermediate routes that will be run by Heap and Fitz.
Edwards might not be a pure burner, but, his yards per catch indicates that he can be a legit threat downfield...

That said, he certainly does come with issues...I'd be ok if we didn't end up with him, only if we did grab a more pure, deep ball speedster....

I think we said the same thing when the Cards put Levi at Left Tackle and Brandon Keith at right and had (we thought) two good running backs and a handful of blocking tight ends. You know, last season.

As I said, I doubt we'll see much of Housler this year except on special teams or unless one of the top 3 WRs goes down. So then you're looking at King and Heap.

I'll believe a reformulated offense when I see it.
