One of the contentions by high-revenue teams, such as the Cowboys, was lower-revenue clubs like the Bengals don't work hard enough to create revenue. At one point during the often contentious negotiations, the Boston Globe reported, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones mockingly offered to buy the naming rights to Paul Brown Stadium for $5 million. Jones said, "I can double that in about five minutes, Mike." Mike Brown, reportedly, did not respond.
-- Cincinnati Enquirer

I know this isn't Cardinal related, but Paul Brown was the father of the modern offense. He's not only a football legend, but he's a legend of unforgettable proportion in Ohio. This was a classless comment by Jerry Jones. Of course Paul Brown's name doesn't make the team money, but that's not the point is it?

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but if Arizona had a coach or player with the history behind him in the same vein as a Paul Brown than I'd say name the stadium after him and let the profits be dammed.

As long as I'm on a soapbox, this "money at all costs" approach that Jerry Jones seems to love is part of the reason that greedy owners almost changed the face of the game (possible CBA expiration/work stoppage/doomsday scenario) by squabling over % of profit instead of just enjoying the fact that their league can turn over a healthy profit in the first place.

Agreed - I like teams that buck the bucks and give a non-corporate name to the stadium.

Jerry Jones can be an ass without trying sometimes. When he lived in Little Rock he lived about 3 blocks from me and his wife and my wife were in a Garden Club together. I will say he is dedicated to football and he is living his life's dream to own the Cowboys. He also knows how to make money. He earned most of it from oil and gas. He and Jimmy Johnson both played football for the U. of Arkansas and he still is in Little Rock on a regular basis promoting the Cowboys as Little Rock is a Cowboy town.

Paul Brown is indeed a legend in the NFL. He ranks right there with George Halas. I can still picture paul Brown with his Tom Landry type hat and long coat. I can also still picture Jim Brown running around, over and through would be tacklers and then looking like he was on his last leg when he would get up from being tackled. The Bengals were an NFL force at one time.

Yes, Jerry Jones is an ass. But on this point I agree with him. If Mike Brown doesn't want to sell the naming rights to the Bengals' stadium it's his right, but he can't then turn around and expect a share of the Cowboys' naming rights. Contribute to the pot, or keep your fingers out of it.

Crap.
At least I got the part about the state of Ohio.
In my fever of persecution I ignored geography and accuracy, which diminishes the point I was trying to make.
Crap again.

Maybe TO and Jerry Jones ARE a good fit?

I know one thing for sure though. If I was him and wanted to have TO toned down and not be so 'only about me or Me-O', I sure wouldn't go about saying stuff like this in the media.

Sort of like when a teacher cusses in class....the kids are allowed to.

If JJ acts like this, why can't TO? Great job jones, I hope you get what you deserve.

I agree with one of the arguments the large market teams puts up and that is they spend more money to put a better product on the field and would appear to be better football team managers. Whey should the support the teams that do not spend the necessary money to make money or ones who are just flat incompetent. Green Bay is no big market team but they know how to make money. It is sort of the American way that you make it on your own or sink. There are exception but that is the general way it works. If the NFL has to downsize then so be it. If teams cannot make it in one market then move to another. In our case that has failed two times or three if you count Chicago as a failure. Something is wrong here.

He's right in the context of what he's talking about, we now are actually going to move closer to the haves, instead of the have nots.

The new stadium provides a windfall for the owners, they should free up the cash and start spending.

Jerry Jones personally owes me $80.

I kid you not.

This debt goes back to 1989. I should charge him interest.

Texas Stadium is owned by the City of Irving, Texas. I'm quite sure that Jones' hands are tied in the matter, and that the Cowboys will in fact sell the naming rights to their new stadium when it opens in a few years.

Regardless, Jones has turned the Cowboys into a money making machine while several of the "poor" owners complain about a lack funds (relative to teams like the Cowboys), while at the same time ignoring obvious, and easily exploitable revenue streams that would help them contribute to the Owners pot.

I can't stand Jones, his ridiculous face lift, or his freaking Cowboys. But he's right on this one.

Other than the Redskins, I'm not sure any team owns their stadium. Most stadiums are owned and operated by a municipality or other "authority." Likewise, the Cards will not own the new stadium, but they secured the ability to sell the naming rights during the initial negotiations when the TSA was being formed.
