Jets release plans for West Side stadium

KAREN MATTHEWS / Associated Press

Posted: 47 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets released details of their planned West Side stadium Tuesday, featuring wind turbines and solar collector tubes to generate much of its own electricity and hot water.

"We envision this as being the greenest building to date," said William Pedersen of Kohn Pedersen Fox, the New York-based architecture firm designing the project.
In addition to housing the Jets, the $1.4 billion stadium would be integral to the city's bid for the 2012 Olympics, which got a boost Tuesday with the news that New York was chosen as one of five finalists to host the games.

Pedersen called the Olympic announcement "tremendously exciting" and said, "We feel we have a stadium that sets the right tone for it."

The stadium would be a rectangle bounded by 11th and 12th avenues and 30th and 33rd streets on the far West Side of Manhattan.

Pedersen said its design, which differs from the typical circular or oval stadium, is meant to fit seamlessly into the city's grid.

"It should feel as if it's very much connected into this particular place and as opposed to a stadium simply looking as if it could be anywhere, like a UFO landing from space," he said.

The south facade of the stadium would contain 25,000 solar collector tubes and the walls would be topped by 34 wind turbines, each 40 feet tall.

Pedersen said the windmills would generate almost all of the energy for the facility when it is being used as a football stadium and about 25 percent when it is being used as a convention and exhibition hall.

The Jets, whose lease at the Meadowlands in New Jersey expires in 2008, have committed to spending $800 million in private funds on the stadium. The city and state would add $300 million each to build a retractable roof and a deck over the existing rail yards.

The project, officially called the New York Sports and Convention Center, would anchor the city's plan to redevelop a large swath of that area.

Backers say the stadium would create 7,000 permanent jobs and 18,000 construction jobs and would be a good deal for the city and state. But community groups and many elected officials oppose using tax dollars for a sports facility when schools and city services are facing a budget crunch.

Wasn't the original concept of the Cards stadium hovering 1.5 billion?

Yes but that was with total site developement. Which included Shops housing and businesses. That stadium was about the same price as the one in Glendale.

Looks like they cloned part of Bank One Ball Park and the Phoenix, Main Library.

Great Architectral firm "KPF." Motorola once hired them to design their corp. head quaters to be built in Scottsdale. But that project feel through. Too Bad it was a nice design. Looked like a ship in the desert concept.

How can our stadium which is being built for 380 million or so and considered to be extremely advanced. Be so cheap as compared to this one which will cost well over a billion?

Doesnt sound possible.

Read the article.

Do you know how much land is in NY close to Manhattan. The land alone probably costs just as much as our staduim. The stadium is also going to have a lot of other facilities, almost a stadium/convention center suitable to hold the olympics. They will also spend a lot on alternative type fuels systems for electricity, such as solar and wind power which can get very expensive.

Also if I remember correctly they wanted to push the staduim issue as fast as possible becuase they wanted to order all of the steel becuase the price for steel was projected to go way up. If we waited any longer to order our steel I think the projections of 380 mill would have been 540 mil. Not sure of the exact numbers but I do remember that issue coming up.

You must remember In NYC you must pay Vinny, Guido, Nunzo, Tony, and Sammy before you pay anyone else. Then you have to pay off the city officals, then the State officals, then and maybe then you may get a permit. Then once construction starts their are all the labor bosses.

Just Joking Uncle Vinny...!!!

My question is why is our new stadium only seats 63,000 when other facility seats 65k-70k? or is it cause we don't have a South End Zone?

I think it is to help out the blackrules the first few years the team is in the new stadium. If I remember correctly, in the plans there is room for expansion to add more seats later on down the road.

Anyone else have info on this, or am I competly wrong.

That stadium in NY is also being built on a platform, over existing rail yards.

Azdad-

Yes, our seating capacity will be 63,000, unless a major event (Super Bowl) is here, then they set up seating on the end the field rolls out. This increases our capacity to near 70,000.

I'll bet if we get a home playoff game, that we use the extra space.

I think 63,000 is perfect for us. Most stadiums are around this size, the seats are closer, and easier to sell out for lifting blackouts.

At the last minute, they decided to build Bank One Ballpark about 5,000 seats bigger than planned. Those seats look terrible empty, and only get sold a few times a year.

No. The Jets plan to build this regardless of NYC's Olympic bid. However, the stadium would be used if NYC were to get the Olympics.

I think they were talking around 70,000 or so.

And just my opinion, THIS WILL NEVER BE BUILT. Too much neighborhood opposition and the damn city is like $10 billion in debt. No city coouncilperson or state legislator who's interested in keeping their jobs will vote to approve the $300 million dollars (BEFORE construction overruns which could easily double that figure) in public money to build this boondoggle.
