Notre Dame ended up winning 21 to 13 today over San Diego State. They were aided by a questionable fumble call at the goal line that would have put the Aztecs up 20 to 7 in in the late third/early fourth quarter.

Here are Clausen's numbers:

21-34, 237 yds, 3 TDs, 2 INTs

He did make a handful of nice throws and had a few tds. One of his interceptions was tipped off of the shoulder pads of his receiver. The other interception was a bad decision on a jump ball in the endzone.

Overall, I have been fairly unimpressed with him for the past two seasons. Last year he was a Freshman and seemed overmatched which can be expected when his line couldn't block and they couldn't run. For the first game, the line still doesn't look great for running or passing. There is something about the way that he throws. It just appears that he does not get too much zipp on his passes and his accuracy isn't that great either.

I don't think that arm strength is the most important factor but throws that are soft and off target are definitely more likely to be interecepted.

The defense looks solid (against SD State) but I was looking for a more dominating performance.

San Diego State lost to CAL POLY last weekend. SDSU is a horrid team, and got screwed out of a win today. ND just plain sucks.

It is confirmed. I will never fully like ND with Charlie Weis as head coach. No way ND should almost lose to San Diego CC.

USC fans are obsessed with his hair. First the spikey hairdo he had in highschool and now because it appears he's losing his hair quite young.

Seems like he's playing quite a bit better so far this year, lot of pressure the whole family played QB and they're counting on him now to make it big.

Mulli, if Weis gets any bigger, he'll soon be able to fill out Mangini's left pant leg.

Did you mean Mark Mangino, cause he brings perspective to the subject.

Lest we forget Ralph Friedgen.

Mangino is fat. Seriously, seriously fat.

September 26, 2006 by Darren K. Carlson

I know it doesn't have anything to do with football. And it might be a little insensitive to say it. And, Kansas fans will come out of the woodwork to scold me for bringing it up again. But, Nebraska's game with Kansas this week revealed the obvious once again. Mark Mangino is fat, very fat. And, isn't it about time he did something about it?

When you see pictures of Mangino or see him on TV, it hard not to stop and sort of marvel at how big he is. A friend of mine would say he is "State Fair fat". It's like I suddenly know why they removed Pluto as a planet. They were making room for Mangino. The guy is like a planetoid. I saw somebody throw him a water bottle and it stopped 4 feet from him. Then...it went it to a circular orbit. The guy has his own gravitational field!

He sort of makes me think of what Southpark's Eric Cartman would look like all grown up. Can't you just hear the KU sideline? "You guys, seriously. Run the quarterback draw! You must respect my authority!"
On a serious note

Okay, I'm done making sport of this guy's weight now. Really, I shouldn't judge. I'm genetically fortunate enough to have never had to battle a weight problem. And, I know folks who have and know that it is tough. But, here's what really rubs me about Mangino's weight, and what should bother other overweight Americans, too. This guy has all the resources in the world to help him lose weight. Seriously, he has professional trainers and dieticians and very fine facilities all at his disposal. Maybe Mangino has a disorder or glandular problem that makes it harder for him. I don't know. But at this point, it looks like only variable has to be the person himself. And, that's just sad.

We all know how stressful the coaching profession is. And, the coaches at Maryland and Toledo both dropped 50+ pounds to try and improve their health. I can only hope Mangino is doing or will do the same for himself. Please, mix a salad in to your diet and walk a few laps. Until then, your weight and behavior risk your health, Coach. And, you make yourself a topic for bloggers like me.

Now the spin will be something like this:

Big deal. Michigan sucks anyway and Clausen still sucks. It was all a weather-related fluke win anyway. Wait till next week. You'll see.

So that will be Michigan State. They aren't bad and historically give the Irish fits. If MSU wins, as they might, since they are at home, it will be see: Notre Dame lost to another mediocre team. If Notre Dame wins, bah, the Big 10 sucks anyway.

That's okay. We are used to it. Bring it on. Notre Dame should win 9 games this year, with a young team and fairly mild schedule. After last year's debacle, I'll take it. Next year, we'll see.
