He might have been talking about the Presidential Debate which happened in Tempe that year.

Hilarious story. I have to admit though, probably 99% of the people I know are not sitting in the seats during half time of games. Even when we are we usually are not paying attention to the half time "events". If could have happened and I would have been completely oblivious to it. Even nowadays if I am at a game with buddies we are usually downing beers on the concourse and could care less what the half time stuff is that is going on.
