Mar. 19—ST. PAUL — After hinting that it should have been seeded higher than eighth on Tuesday with a reasonably close loss to No. 1 seed Cretin-Derham Hall, John Marshall was even more emphatic about its strength Wednesday morning in the state Class 4A boys basketball tournament at Concordia University St. Paul's Gangelhoff Center.

That came in the consolation semifinals, with JM burying No. 5 seed Apple Valley 78-53.

JM assumed a two-point halftime lead, then roared, outscoring the Eagles 45-22 in the second half as it improved its record to 26-5 overall. Apple Valley finished 23-8.

JM will next play No. 7 seed Moorhead in the consolation final at 4 p.m. Thursday at Gangelhoff Center.

JM rode a beautifully balanced effort by its senior-dominated team in beating Apple Valley. Brayson Sawyer scored 22 points on 9-for-14 shooting (4-for-5 on 3-pointers), Denard Simpson had 19 points (6-for-8 shooting), Eli Ladu had 17 (8-for-15) and Angok Kucha had 12 (6-for-9).

For the game, JM shot a sparkling 55%. It was 4-for-7 overall on 3-pointers.

The Rockets also had a dominant effort on the boards, outrebounding Apple Valley by a whopping 46-17. The 6-foot-8 Kucha led the way with 10 rebounds. Simpson had eight, Ladu and Joe Lueth seven each and Sawyer six.

JM also forced 15 Apple Valley turnovers while losing possession just eight times itself. And it outscored the Eagles 18-2 in second-chance points.
