That's hilarious.

I don't see how anyone would believe that to be real. Real funny? Yeah. Especially when he sticks the gum under his desk. THAT was awesome.

There's a long-standing challenge to actors to upstage Letterman, anyway. Letterman is the best interview in television, period, because he has no tolerance or respect for anyone aware of their importance. So actors, not wanting to be dinged by Letterman for the humor of midwesterners who like to see these people get taking down a notch, often go on there and just act bizarre. Andy Kaufman is just the most sensationalized. Remember Madonna? Crispin Glover? Cher? Drew Berrymore? Harvey Pekar? John Goodman interupting a question to ask Bruce Willis to come pick him up after the interview because he was too drunk to get back to the hotel by himself?

Phoenix is just following a long tradition of Dave's anti-TV programming. I'm sure the producer's gave it a huge thumb's up.

Anyone who has ever seen Phoenix in an interview knows he is a complete flake. I think the interview was for real for this drugged, whacko of an actor. His publicist is certainly saying so, as is Phoenix himself. And this wouldn't just be a joke on Dave: It's been going on for a bit.

Remember that his appearance was a contractual agreement to promote his movie. I seriously doubt the studio would approve of this were it simply some shenanigans, nor would a studio be as likely to hire someone who would do something this idiotic were it a joke. He's not attracting more people to his movie with this kind of behavior.

Time will tell. I consider him a very talented actor, and would like to see him keep doing that, sans the lunacy.

I have never seen a film with this guy in it where he didn't wreck it. The guys is a HORRIBLE actor, IMO.

Thank goodness he is leaving to go do crystal meth and exstacy all day.

Yeah.....keep chewing that gum buddy, nice to see you can't stay sober long enough to do a promo for the movie that is giving you millions of un-earned B.S. dollars.

I cannot stand actors, and musical artists like this that are SLAMMED down the publics throat and fed to the machine.

Horrible, absolutely horrible.

Walk the Line was a great movie...you gotta give him SOME credit, geez :)

Not only do I think it was an act, I think Letterman was in on it. It's not a new schtick, this F'ing with talk show hosts. Kaufman is the obvious example, but guys like Charles Groden did it throug out his career, too.

I think it's ironic that some of the same people that don't think he's a good actor have been duped by his performance.

You might be right, but what purpose did it serve? To get publicity? Seems like there could be a better way...

He's a bored, famous creative rich guy. I don't think it's done out of a motivation for publicity or money or anything business related. I think he's just having fun. Just like Groden and Kauffman and anyone else who f's with the media machine.

How does it hurt his new movie? I wasn't even aware that he had a new movie. I am now. And I don't watch letterman.

Point me to the last thread about Joaquin Phoenix on this board...that was still getting responses five days later.

And did anyone see the video of him rapping in Colorado? Hilarious.

And SNL even spoofed this interview, too.

It's getting MASSIVE attention. Extremely successful from a PR perspective.

Did it? Like Uncle Chris said, I think this kind of stuff would hurt his new movie more than help it. If, in fact, it was an act.

Us schmucks have spent a great deal of time talking about him as of late... It's as simple as that...

Most stars tend to believe the old credo of: "any press is good press"... Has worked for decades...

While I agree with this, it has still had as good or better of an effect in that regard than most PR stunts. Sometimes not really trying is the magic formula.

BTW - I thought Phoenix was done making movies? Didn't he say he is finished and is now a full time music "artist"?? What new movie does he have coming out?

Phoenix Says Rap Career Is Real <<<LINK

If this is indeed a prank, it is one of colossal proportions (and not just for f'ing with Dave as some suggest), as he's prepared for it for weeks and actually set up a recording studio in his home. Helluva prank.

Anything is possible, but I strongly suspect this druggie is pulling a Mickey Rourke....

Yes, P-Diddy is producing his album, and Casey Affleck is filming it all for a documentary of the adventure.

It's as "real" as anything you want to say is real coming out of Hollywood can be, I guess. But there are an awful lot of hands stirring the pot here...you don't have that kind of activity around someone legitimately losing it.

Joaquin Phoenix returns to Letterman tonight.
Considering his joke or whatever it was turned into an enormous flop, this should be interesting,
