If he is willing to be a rush DE in sub packages, sign him. If not, move on. I imagine at this point of the year, he doesn't have a ton of options on the table.

Agreed! Joey Porter was never in Abraham's league IMO. At this point at a reasonable cost, I'd seriously consider him. As K9 says, we have no one at OLB that can win one-on-one battles. Abraham, as of last season, could still do that.

Looking at Abraham's game logs, I am not so sure he can.

Even if he didn't produce consistently, he single handely matched the sack total of Acho/Schofeld/Alexander last year.

Beggars can't be choosers, if we can get him for a decent deal, he'd greatly improve one of our biggest weaknesses.

He had the advantage of going against the Cardinals, Raiders, Chiefs and Saints. He wasn't very good.

Compared to what? He'd instantly be the best pass rushing OLB on our team. If we can get him on a cheap short term deal, what's the downside?

Remember when Derek Anderson made the Pro bowl that year. Then he signed with the Cardinals and was better than max hall and whoever when the leenart was cut.

I'd prefer an incentive based deal. A lower base and the number of actual sacks allowing him to reach his final number.

incentives are good....but if they make up the bulk of the contract they are usually hard to swallow for a formerly "dominant" player....

truth is....he could have a fantastic season and never actually record a sack....personally I do not want anybody on the field whose only focus is to hit certain stats so they can get paid......often in defense, a guy has to hold back and guard his gap....cannot do that if he is always firing away trying to get to the QB....that deal would force the guy to be totally one dimensional, which would render him ineffective as a team player.

We are talking about a designated pass rusher, not a three down DE/OLB.

I think people are missing the boat here. I see him coming in as situational DE. Like Frostee Rucker.

This team will have more of a 4-3 look this year then many of us are expecting based on the tea leaves. I dont see them trying to convert a 35 year old DE to OLB and thinks thats going to be a good idea.

In what "situation" does Frostee Rucker come into the game? Dude has 11 sacks in 5 NFL seasons and is on his third team in three years.

Is the situation "a dire injury"?

Does a situation where your counting on sacks from Lorenzo Alexander and Matt Shaughnessy count?

Maybe. At least Shaugnessy has 15.5 sacks in 4 NFL seasons and was fleeing a team that was primarily interested in shedding salaries.

Valid point and not to argue, but one of the seasons he got hurt in week 3.
15.5 sacks in 3 yrs and 2+ games plus great against the run. He should help the Cards alot.

Anyone else think we'll see more 4-3 looks this year?

Huge fan. He is a local kid who I followed since he was in HS. I am a Wisconsin fan so that worked out well. I am a Pats fan and followed Oakland for the past few years as well as AZ(since OB Schofield was with the Cards). I know the family pretty well. I was surprised he signed in AZ since you already had 2 pretty good DE's in Campbell and Dockett. I didn't see the fit but it looks like you will use him at OLB as well as a DE in the nickel. I think he might surprise people if he can play at the level he did in Oakland in 2010. Playing with Oakland in 2010, Richard Seymour said he was the best DE against the run in the NFL. It looks like AZ will want him to rush the passer more, so hopefully he comes in under the 285-290 he weighed at the end of last year. I am biased, but I think he might be one of the top FA signings of this past year. Sorry for hijacking a John Abraham thread. I like Abraham but think if the Cards are looking for a pure pass rusher, Mark Anderson, recently cut by the Bills, might be a better option. A couple years ago in NE, Anderson had 10 sacks. He isn't great against the run, but he can certainly get after the passer. He would come cheaper than Abraham and if his knee is healthy, I think he might have more left in the tank being much younger. When Abraham visited New England early in Free Agency, the rumors said he was looking for $5-6M/year. I am sure that is no longer the case, but for a pass rusher, I think Anderson could be a better value on a 1yr/make good contract like he had in NE. I hope the Pats kick the tires on Anderson. Just my opinion. Anyways, it looks like the Cards will have a new bunch of fans in CT, MA, NH, VT.
