This is awful. Ryan Clark has this and when he played, he couldn't play @ Denver because of what the altitude did to his blood.

John Brown is a great kid and doesnt deserve this. Ugh....

:-(

The Sickle cell mutation shows up across the globe in areas where malaria is endemic. The malaria virus can not attach to a sickle cell red blood cell, basically making the person with the sickle cell immune to malaria, which in an area with malaria, a huge evolutionary advantage. And since the life expectancy in those areas was 40-50 years, the now shorter life-span didn't come into play.

Old co-worker of mine lost his brother in his early 20's to Sickle Cell complications. Rough news :\

What awful news. Sickle call is an evil disease.

Thoughts and prayers for one of my favorite Cardinals.

This is awful. Ike Taylor has this and when he played, he couldn't play @ Denver because of what the altitude did to his blood.

You feel terrible for him but I guess the good news is at least they found out now. You could tell something wasn't right with him, he just never looked right even when he was playing well he looked like he was limping and just didn't seem right.

They were talking about this on ESPN2 one morning just a few weeks ago with another player and the 2 black guests on the show both said if it were them they would not play in Denver either because of the risk to their health.

I'm not sure what they can do to deal with it, unfortunately I suspect it's something he's going to have to decide can I play with it or not.

Man, such terrible news for an outstanding guy. Works his butt off and now he gets hit with this. Sure hope he can get it contained and get through it. Hate to see this happen

sounds like not the full blown disease -- but the trait

means one of his parents carries the gene, but the other did not

You're right. My bad

Tevin Coleman has it and played pretty well in Denver a few weeks ago.

So, hopefully JB will get great medical care from the Cardinals and they can get work through it (hopefully while continuing to play football).

Hes fine. Its sickle cell so you have to assume maybe a quarter of the league has it since it affects something like 1 in 8 african american men. Very very common.

Patrick had a down year due to diabetes, they identified it, adjusted for it, now hes elite again.

They'll figure out how to help JB so he can be JB again.

Also kinda sad that some people on Twitter today are confusing John Brown with Josh Brown. :|

That's not sad, that's a crime, because by all accounts JOHN Brown is a wonderful human being. On the other hand JOSH Brown is a worthless piece of garbage who needs some sense beat into him like he beats on his wife.

Man, my heart goes out to JB. I had a friend in highschool who had this and I found out later that he only made it to 30 before it got the best of him.

I hope they can treat this in a way that will let him enjoy a long life, football is pretty irrelevant at this point.

My wife works for one of the deans at PSU where he played his college ball. He says he is the real deal, a truly good person and one that deserves his place in the sun.

Be well, young man.

My son currently attends PSU. First person we ran into was from the media department. They raved about how great John Brown is. They sell his Cardinals Jersey in several stores there. My son has never heard anyone say anything but great things about him.

Wish him the best.
