ESPN's Peter Gammons is reporting that Arizona's Randy Johnson has agreed to waive his no-trade clause to go to the Dodgers. However, the deal is currently in limbo because Arizona and Los Angeles are having difficulty agreeing on the players that would be involved in the trade.

Johnson staying put

DENVER – Randy Johnson will remain with the Arizona Diamondbacks, but Steve Finley appears headed on the move.

With about 2 1/2 hours remaining until the 1 p.m. trading deadline, Diamondbacks Chairman and CEO Jerry Colangelo told The Arizona Republic that Johnson, the five-time Cy Young Award winner, was staying put, for all intents and purposes, as a multi-player package with the Los Angeles Dodgers appeared to fall apart.

"It appears more than likely that Randy Johnson will remain a Diamondback, which has always been our choioce and our desire," Colangelo said at 10:30 a.m. (Arizona time) by cell phone. "… I’ll have more to say about it on Monday."

As for Finley, Colangelo said "if something is going to happen with Steve, it’s probably going to happen rather quickly."

Diamondbacks general manager Joe Garagiola Jr., has been talking with the Dodgers and the San Diego Padres about players Arizona would receive for the 39-year-old Finley, who is willing to waive his no-trade clause to only a West Coast team.

Finley becomes a free agent after this season, however, and said again Friday that he would consider re-signing with Arizona.

Johnson has about $23 million left on his contract with the Diamondbacks, who will pay him $16 million next season.

I wish we would have traded the unit for the prospects that the dodgers were offering. Maybe they will trade him in the off season and get more. Who knows...

If this means that Randy will retire as a Diamondback (which is not necessarily the case), I'm happy for two reasons.

I've wanted to see our future Hall of Famer finish his career, and enter the HOF, as a D'back.

And, even a rebuilding last-place team needs an All-Star, expecially as our #1 starter.

It's evident that it was too early to move Brandon Webb from #4 to #2 or #1 this season.

I wonder how much the Dodgers regret their trade with the Marlins now that the 3-team portion of it hasn't materialized.

If Randy has OK'd a Dodger trade, but it fell apart, will Randy continue his Mariners' precedent of disrupting the ballclub until he is moved?

That's not good.

All the clueless Webb bashers, including his own boss, need to shut up and look past his 3-11 record. Guy is a sinker ball pitcher, has a mid 3.00s ERA, and is playing in front of one of the worst defenses in baseball in a hitter's park.

Colangelo and Garagiola need to look in the mirror if they're going to be blaming someone for Webb not having the year he had in 2003. It was their decsion that Cintron, Hillenbrand, and Tracy were an adequate left side of the infield. It was their decision to hire coaches that would ignore the importance of playing solid defense.

Regardless of all these factors, he's Top 20 in the NL in ERA and strikeouts . To me, he's showed that he is more than capable of holding down the #2 spot behind Randy.
