GRUDEN LOOKING TO GET OUT OF TAMPA?

According to the Tampa Tribune, Bucs coach Jon Gruden is sending out feelers regarding potential job openings in 2007.

Gruden is signed through 2008, but recently there has been speculation from NFL insiders that Gruden could be in danger of being terminated, notwithstanding the Super Bowl trophy that the team won in his first season with the franchise.

So instead of firing Gruden and owing him the balance of his contract (less any money that he earns elsewhere as a coach), the Glazers might be in a position to hold up a potential suitor for a draft pick or two.

The problem, of course, is that Gruden's star has fallen a bit over the past few years. No longer regarded as a hot-blooded up-and-comer, Gruden is now merely a grumpy middle-aged man with a mouth like a sh-t-sprayed sewer.

Really, who would want him, especially if getting him carries with it an obligation to work out a deal with his current team? The Tribune identifies the Cowboys as a possibility, if Bill Parcells packs it in. But we can't see Gruden and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones coexisting. Other teams that might have vacancies after the season include, as we see it, the Ravens, Titans, Jaguars, Chargers, Falcons, Cardinals, and Seahawks.

The Cardinals would be an intriguing fit, given that rookie quarterback Matt Leinart is in desperate need of some quality NFL tutelage.

Gruden would be my #1 choice. The guy won't let player quit and he never gives up himself. He's the opposite of Denny in that regard.

If you go by what the article says, there will be lots of good coaches available.

Would the falcons really give up on Mora? If so, he's near the top of my list. As would be Billick, Del Rio and Holmgren.

I've never been a Gruden fan and his current troubles seem to not only point towards an inability to be a star head coach but make me wonder just how much of the Super Bowl win was Tony Dungy's.

Gruden is terrible at building teams. He's a good offensive Xs and Os guy but that's it. Plus, he prefers mobile quarterbacks and Leinart is a bad fit for his system.

I like Gruden but certainly would not want to give up the Cardinals number one pick for him. He is under contract through 2008 and the Bucs will want compensation for him to allow him to leave. The Cards need all their draft picks.

Agreed. I like him too but would not be giving up picks for him.

He is a firey guy which I like. But he has had little other than riding Dungy's team to the SB.

Funny how his last two teams look to trade him after he wears out his welcome.

Gruden managed to get them into the Super Bowl which was something Dungy never did. Plus, Gruden's old team, Oakland Raiders, was the AFC team and I can assure you that it was Gruden's team and not Bill Callahan's.

Again, just another offensive specialist. And poor timing with the Bucs going downhill. While not an awful choice, we could do better.

Yeah, you guys are right. Gruden did nothing but get Tony Dungy's team to the Super Bowl which beat Gruden's Raiders team.

Give the guy some freaking credit.

No f'n way do we surrender any picks for a coach. Too many needs.

If TB fires him, that's one thing. But if he's under contract we shouldn't touch him with a 10-foot pole.

There's just too much risk involved in hiring Gruden. He would probably have us in the playoff hunt next year, but would burn this franchise out real soon. He reminds me of Billy Martin in that respect. He'd be an OK hire because this franchise needs to taste success quickly, but if we don't have some sort of continued success, the fans would jump off the bandwagon real soon.

Burn us out? You'd think that we might have to be good before this phrase is used in regards to the Cards.

I wouldn't mind giving up a draft pick for Chucky. Not a 1st or 2nd, but maybe something or two after that. Sure this team has needs, as EVERY team does, but they also have money to fill needs. I hate when the teams feels like they've solved needs through the draft. This would incent them to fill their needs through FA rather than sitting on excess cash. I'd rather them feel like they have to solve their needs through free agency, and build depth and future talent through the draft.

I like Gruden. He kicks some butt and makes players accountable. Enough coddling, let's get a REAL coach...and GM....and throw in an owner that gives a crap while we're at it
