Indianapolis Colts' wide receiver Josh Downs was recently asked about the upcoming quarterback competition between Anthony Richardson and free agent addition Daniel Jones.

"Two extremely talented quarterbacks and whoever wins it they earned it," Downs said. "But I'm excited. I came in with Anthony, so I got a good friendship with him. Daniel's a good dude. I've heard he's a great dude from a lot of people, so I'm excited."

Once the Colts are able to be back on the practice field, head coach Shane Steichen said that Richardson and Jones will be splitting the first team reps. Ultimately, the more consistent quarterback over the course of the summer is going to be the Colts' starter in Week 1.

Both quarterbacks have their warts. Richardson completed just 47% of his throws last season and had the fifth-highest turnover-worthy play rate in the NFL. Jones, meanwhile, was benched and then eventually released last season by the New York Giants.

However, the hope and expectation is that the competition will help elevate the play of both Richardson and Jones, and therefore the play of the quarterback position and the offense as a whole.

Richardson refining his fundamentals and continuing to get more and more reps will be important factors when it comes to him taking a big step forward in 2025, said Steichen earlier this offseason.

One major advantage that Richardson has this offseason compared to last is that he is fully healthy and was able to hit the ground running once the 2024 season ended. He's also reportedly working with the same quarterback mechanics coach that Josh Allen used early on in his career.

"I've heard he's looked really good," Downs said of Richardson. "Talked to him multiple times and I'm excited to see him next week. That's my dog. Good competition ahead with him and Daniel Jones and I'm excited for it."

Regardless of the quarterback situation in Indianapolis, Downs has produced at a high level during his first two NFL seasons. After totaling 771 yards as a rookie in 2023, he recorded 803 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 2024. Downs has quickly developed into one of the game's more productive slot receivers.
