During his tenure as Viking coach Denny Benched Randall Cunningham (who had just come off of a NFL MVP year and signed a large contract) and put in Jeff George. Cunningham had been playing poorly while George looked sharp as his back up. George stayed as the starter and the Vikings won their division title. (They lost to the Rams in the playoffs) Denny never stated anything to the press; he never does. He just went and did it.
Point I want to make is that I think Josh is on a very short leash. Denny knows he has a chance to make the playoffs and won't blow it because he feels he has to stay with McCown. IMO Josh will start against the Panthers but if he is playing poorly Denny will pull him and put in King.

If Josh is on a short leash it's because he's taken out the slack in the longest leash I've ever seen. In fact, he didn't even seem to be on a leash for the first 9 games--he looked more like a free-range chicken.

I agree. Green will not cut off his nose to spite his face. McCown will treated no differently than any other player or position.
If the time comes where Green feels the qb is the main reason of the offense's shortcomings, he will make the change.
I support Josh right now because Green supports Josh right now. The kid is as tough as nails. He throws a nice ball. He has good arm strength. He just seems to be "1 second " late in reads and decisions. Thats all it takes in this league for a play to fail.
So many times you see a qb go back, get rushed. and casually dump the pass to an outlet for a 5 to 7 yd gain. It seems when we dump it off , our outlet barely has time to react because the defense has that" 1 second" to close in.
C"MON JOSH. Somehow you got to get it.....and soon!

You do realize why that is don't you? When you have a pattern of consistently taking the short dump off pass, the defense knows this and covers accordingly, that's why we don't get YAC on those plays, and why screens don't work. That's why when we were a WCO team with Jake it was so ineffective, everyone KNEW we weren't going to throw the ball downfield for big plays so they took away that stuff.

We at least started to throw the ball downfield Sunday, if we hit a few of those it'll make a big difference in how teams defend us and then suddenly that guy catching the outlet pass won't have a safety or LB waiting on him when he makes the catch.

I'm not sure but I think if we make the playoffs Denny gets to put his hand in Mr.Bidwill's LOCKBOX.

I agree to a point , Russ. What sticks in my mind is when King came in against the Falcons, he went 4 of 5 with a couple of those soft over the middle dumps for a nice 7 or 8 yard gain. Josh makes that pass look hard. King looked much more relaxed. Help me out here. Could it be because King recognized the situation that much quicker?

Agreed. However, everyone knew Jake wasn't going to throw deep because he has the arm strength of a 6 year old girl....

If someone has the stats to back this up, it would be interesting to post. At this point in Josh McCown's career, he has posted the W vs L record of 5 wins and 7 loses. While not a stellar record by any means, it is an out standing record when compared to some run-of-the-mill quarterbacks that were trying to turn around programs early in their careers. Take a look at the early record of Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Bert Jones, Trent Dilfer, and.... Peyton Manning. It is absolutely amazing these five quarterbacks could have been so horrible early in their careers.

that's my guess, that josh goes to it as an outlet either at the last second, or too early before the defense has gotten "depth" leaving room to run for the guy underneath. King understands the timing better.

Sort of like all those 7 yard passes Centers caught on 3rd and 9, they made for great looking catch numbers, but we really didn't get the first that often and Jake got so locked into it that it was hurting the offense and hurting Centers. He would have been much more dangerous if we went downfield more opening up the underneath for him.

we could spend all ady taking shots at Jake but look at his numbers this year compared to Josh's. It's not even close! Jake throws for more yards in 1 quarter than josh in a whole game.

McCown would have those #s too if he played in Denver. I guarantee that Plummer would be benched by now if he was playing under Denny here. There's no way he would put up with someone who trys to throw left handed passes when he's getting sacked. Jake's had 7 years, 6 starting, to develop some intelligence about when and where to throw the football. Yet, he still makes bonehead plays. Josh is in his first year starting, and the o-line if average at best. Denver has one of the best o-lines and stable of running backs in the NFL. You really can't compare the two on performance this year. As for athletic ability and smarts, I'll take McCown anyday over Plummer.

People insist on comparing teams that don't compare.

Look if you want to compare us to someone use a team with a trainwreck of an Oline and an aging but savy RB.

Do not use a team that manufactures one killer RB after another cause hey, that ISN'T US.

I am so tired of defending Josh when I am really not even defending him. I don't care if the POPE himself is against the guy, all I want is for the criticisim to be FAIR.

I don't know of any very successful QB's in this league who are dealing with the pressure McCown has.

That is a fact. Watch the tapes, sometimes it's just ludicrous.

To be FAIR he misses open guys or at least he has the last two games.

QB's miss open guys when they have all day to throw.

The bottom line is that a coach who has actually been to the playoffs several times and is known for his work with QB's is still trotting him out there at least for now.

Is it not possible that DG may just have a legitimate reason? Is that so hard to accept?

conraddobler,

I am too it just goes on and on and they pop up at every turn.

The only reasons I respond is that people just gloss over that sometimes the other team seems to be camped actually on top of Josh.

Im just going with this response from now on it'll save time.

"Let DG handle it"
