Lucas helping prep star Smith

By Marc J. Spears
Denver Post Staff Writer

Former Nuggets assistant and NBA coach John Lucas has been preparing Oak Hill (Va.) Academy senior forward Josh Smith in Houston for his predraft workouts.

Smith, a McDonald's All- American, has been working on his perimeter shooting against Houston guard Cuttino Mobley and Portland guard Damon Stoudamire.

Smith is scheduled to begin his workouts Tuesday at Atlanta, where he will be matched against Stanford forward Josh Childress. The 6-foot-8, 220- pounder also has scheduled workouts with Charlotte, Washington and Phoenix.

Smith's agent, Brian Dyke, doesn't think his client will drop past Phoenix's seventh pick.

"I think he is going to rise," Dyke said. "He's a much better skilled player than people think. They think he's raw. I don't think these people in Houston think he's raw."

If it supports the idea that the Phoenix Suns will take a player he likes then the answer is yes. :)

I like Josh Smith and I don't think he's that raw but I have these 6 players rated highest...

Okafor
Howard
Iguodala
Biedrins
Harris
Gordon

after that, these 3...

Smith
Deng
Andriuskevicius

I'd like 1 of the top 6, so Shaun Livingston or Josh Childress could knock 1 of them down. MA might be a smokescreen and if there are no trades, 1 of the PG's might not get taken and if Suns aren't interested in a PG - then I don't know who I'd like. I did like JR Smith but have cooled off on him for now. Decisions...

Aw, take it easy on Slin. Phoenix was mentioned in a printed rumor with a quote from an agent. I'm glad for anyone to report anything where Phoenix is mentioned.

Thanks Slin.

I reprint a lot these rumors, so I was not trying to be hard on Slin (compared to some guys on this board I think I am pretty mild :D ).

My point, as I said before, I don't like taking HS players. I am really glad that Amare worked out, but I don't like pressing our luck. Most HS players are simply not ready to play, even after three years.

Maybe Josh Smith is a lot more polished than the reports suggest. I'm sure the Suns will spend time looking at him. But I don't think he will help the team in the next two years.
